Hey everybody:
I'm currently at a small boat station and was told a couple of months ago that stations do not have requirements for emt's but only for life savers. Now our new TPO says that it is possible to be done. Has there been a change in policy regarding station personnel attending emt c-school in petaluma? Or can it only be done with other branches as it was done in the past here.

Thanks

Just put in the chit for the C school. Make sure that your unit puts in the need for you to be an EMT.

To add support to BTDT's advice, I would write a memo justifying the needs for a qualified EMT vs. a Life-Saver. For example, do you respond to geezers having heat attacks (Florida, ya know), possible drowning, anaphylaxis reactions requiring the assistance of administaring a ptatient's epi-Pen (bee, wasps stings?). Document ANYTHING that your unit responds to above the level of Life-saver, get someone to help you format a memo if you have no clue, and submit it to your command. You initiative enough could be a ticket to EMT-School. Good luck.

Actually put in a short term training request.

Thanks Dogshow. I, and others, know that the "chit" meant STTR.

Appreciate the help. Talking to our TPO she's is looking for the qualified personnel requirements which I'm pretty sure will turn up to be that of life savers. So we will take your advice and write up the memo explaining how it's not only heat exhaustion/dehidration cases of northeners in the middle of the summer.

THANKS

HK, Check with the EMS people down there in KW. They probably have a local EMT School you might be able to attend. The Naval Hospital, if it's still there, might also have a program. If not just put in for the School using ETR in people soft. Your XPO or OIC will know how. The school in Petaluma is very fast passed. if you get a chance to go don't plan on doing any sight seeing. Class every day and study hall every night or you wont pass. The NREMT is tough. I'm taking the NREMT-P test next month and have been going to school for 2 years now. Best of luck!!!

You're welcome. Actually, I made a typo error and meant heart attack, Roll Eyes, instead of 'heat' attack, but hey, heat attack, or rather, heat emergencies happen in hot-a$$ Florida, so that would still qualify as a need for an EMT-B. Good luck.

You will probably get a "Welcome Aboard" package with some information but this may help: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/tcpet/reporting/gethere.shtm

Another question for you prior EMT-C schoolers. Is there any reason to pack Trops? The orders dont mention them and the uniform for the first day of class is ODU.

Take this as old information as I attended the school in 1990, but we did spend a day of school in the water up in Bodega Bay(great white habitat) working with the station learning how to secure patients(think waterskier who just got ate up by a boat prop, or sailor who's taken a boom to the head) in stokes litters and transferring to 41/44's. Although these days I guess it's likely to be a 47' Enjoy the school, it's very fast paced, a lot of material, and a lot of studying jammed into three weeks. One rough night at the E club or out on the town on a school night can set you up for failure right quick! -Jeff

The school is doing an EMT olympics at the base pool. They did it for the IDHS School EMT re-cert portion, it was actually pretty sweet.
