I'm hoping someone can enlighten me or re-direct me to someone who can.
Okay, so there was a few of us today talking about medical issues and the Coast Guard. Adult ADD/HD came up and it started a debate; I need to know what the Coast Guard says about this particular disorder. Can someone stay in the CG while having this, even though it does not affect his/her work/duty? Or is the medication taken the defining factor?
"Use of medications to treat, control or improve performance for individuals diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (either ADD or ADHD) is disqualifying."
Hope this clears up any of your confusion on the issue. Cheers!
Actually the confusion of the discussion was when they are already in and serving without medication and have been diagnosed. The manual did not say anything about that, I'm assuming the manual was talking about someone going through MEPS or something. I guess diqualified is disqualified regardless of status right? Thanks for the replies....
If not on medication, the member is to be processed for separation per the Personnel Manual(not a medical discharge) if the condition adversely affects the member's ability to perform his/her duties.
If a member is on a prescribed medication for the said condition, he/she is administratively separated, as stated above by HSC Roy.
I have had three of these in two years... Two of them have been discharged and the other is still on active duty.
The diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is not necessarily a career ender. If the member is able to fulfill the requirements of his/her rate and training, there is no issue.
