I don't think the author should be making the issue that "new vets" get better treatment. I think the issue should be that all vets get treatment. By separating the category of "vet" all you do is alienate people. In the Marines you always hear the phrase "Old Corps, New Corps, My A$$, it's all the Same Corps"
In my opinion that is how this should be looked at. I don't want to be considered a higher priority because I am a vet of OIF, I want to be considered based off my needs. That is the issue I think we need to yell from the roof tops. ALL of our vets need assistance, but to say that because an "old vet" being put in financial hardship is any more dire than a "new vet" being put in financial hardship is wrong. If any of our Veterans are in need it is a dire situation.
I think most people would agree that the typical American public is pretty fickle. An issue like Walter Reed comes up, the public screams for a resolution, and then after a few screams they get tired of it and move on to something new to yell about. Not really caring if a sound resolution was produced or not.
I can almost guarantee you that if vets start breaking apart into new breed- old breed, the only thing to come of it will be animosity. I know I don't think I am better than a Vietnam vet, nor do I think they are better than me. We are equal.
