This is outrageous to say the least! These service members deserve more respect than this!

RAF personnel ordered not to wear uniforms in public after suffering abuse in the street

By MICHAEL SEAMARK and IAN DRURY

They serve their country with pride and are ready to put their lives on the line.

Yet RAF personnel have been repaid with volleys of abuse in the street.

So bad is the problem that servicemen and women from RAF Wittering have been ordered not to wear uniform in public...

Yes, unfortunately it's an indication of the times we live in, particularly in the UK.

Although in another era, I recall the days when military members wore their dress uniforms off duty when walking out or attending functions etc and they were made welcome by all members of the local community.

How times have changed. Frown

I was stationed at RAF St Mawgan from 94ish to 97 and RAF/RN personal weren't allowed to wear uniforms off base at all.

Did that rule change or was it a local deal? I was under the impression it was standard for everyone.

The rules changed a few years back but during the N.I. Troubles it became standard a PERSEC procedure for servicemen not to venture outside the wire in uniform and not to broadcast the fact that they were serving. The PIRA was not averse to murdering soldiers and their families not just in Britain and Ireland but in Germany as well.

Hi
I was in the Army and the Royal Air Force in the forties and fifties. We went out in our uniforme and were respected. We were looked up to and respected by all, thats more than I can say for the present population led by rot gut Georgie and his labour louts!!!
I can say my life was interesting, lived through the blitz as a young boy, I have a tale or two to tell!

Welcome to the Forum Ken.

Yes, I also recall in the early 1960's going to the local dances in uniform and with the local girls going for the uniform, we were in great demand. Smile

I see by your profile that you were a Spark on the Canberras - did you enjoy working on them?

Without belittling the RAF I find it somewhat amusing that incidents like this seem to happen around RAF camps and are less prevalent around those of the Royal Marines and Paras, I wonder why that is Wink

Treating your question seriously Wink - it's because the Paras and booties tend to be confined to garrison towns.
