If one either reads about the story or watches the feature film titled "The Great Escape", one gets an idea of just how amazing a feat it was to plan and execute such an escape plan. Most of those Allied POWs who escaped were quickly recaptured, but at least 3 made it back across the channel to England, via neutral countries, if I can recall correctly, including RAF Squadron Leader Jimmy James, who was described in the above article. While we remember those like him who did escape, those who did not survive the brutal years in Axis POW camps should be remembered as well. The feats of "Great Escapers" such as him should ensure all POWs who both made it home or unfortunately died in captivity will not be forgotten.
