I attended an awards ceremony last friday. At the ceremony I met a Marine on leave from 3d LAR. He said that their not supposed to call other Marines, jarhead, killer, because jarhead is demeaning and killer is inapropriate in todays society. And their not supposed to use the term Devil Dog unless it is in a positive way (ie not chewing someones azz)
They also don't have to stand at parade rest when talking to a SNCO. He said that this wasn't a battalion thing but has been sort of put out Marine Corps wide. I was wondering if he was blowing smoke up my arse or if there is alot of truth to it. He was also complaining about how hard it is to get a CAR. He said he was in three firefights and it was still being decided on whether or not they rated it. Just wondering if there was any truth to this as well. Because from what you guys have been saying lately everyone and their mom gets one just from being mortared a couple of times. |

About the CAR,
When I first got to my AO and was doing the rip with the outgoing unit, I got caught in a ambush of saf on a ied. About a week in country and that was my first writeup for the car. It took about 14 Months for the car to show on my MOL awards page. Getting the CAR for just being Mortared? Its a grey area, depending if you are on one of the big camps like TQ or camp fallujah or one of the smaller fobs or OPs actually out in the ****. |

Despite what the papers might say, Marines still call each other whatever the hell we want, all non-rates BETTER still be standing at parade rest for SNCO's, and a CAR can be easily given out or not based upon the command.

My unit (2/23) still uses all those terms in any context that is desired. Ive seen a few Marines not stand at parade rest with an SNCO. Depending on the SNCO I have seen a few of the Marines get dizzy and fall over for no reason. Usually they return in parade rest, it must help keep their balance. |

This is an ongoing topic...IMO the Marine Corps is getting softer, more considerate towards people's feelings, and making policies that astound the old salt dogs. Like today I learned that you can no longer hike with your main pack, because too many Marines have been hurt. Humps suck, but if you can't do a 6 mile hump carrying a decent amount of weight, how can you do a 6 hr dismounted patrol in Iraq or A'stan?
Are we Marines or Girl Scouts? It seems that General Conway is the driving force behind all these pu$$y rules, none of this $h!+ happened when Haggee was around. |

No, the new rule is you cannot hump with main packs with your flak and kevlar on unless it's a tactical movement. Your chain of command however can just pass out some blanks and call it such.
We did a 10 mile hump 3 weeks ago without our flaks and kevlar. It was.....it was just unbelievable. |

Humps nowadays I dont know what is going on. I talked to guys in Lejeune and they said only assault packs, flaks and kevlars for hump like you said Ahill, and if its longer then 10 miles just flaks and kevlars.
I was at Pendleton last month and saw a unit humping out to the 64 Area, and it was just a cluster**** of gear. Some with the Main packs, some wearing the assault pack, some with just a flak/kevlar on. Some had weapons some didnt. It was just weird looking. Although I did see SOIers hump with full packs in pendleton in a ravine. |

Right after Vietnam ended for Marine Infantry the only SNCO we ever stood tall for was Battalion Sergeant Major who would stand you at ease as soon as your heels clicked. Everyone else we addressed as "Gunny" or "Staff" in the rear and usually by their last name or nickname in the field.
We were always pretty loose with titles because the only thing anyone cared about was helping each other get home alive so no one wanted to get anyone sniper killed. Fastest way to break a new officer of calling people by rank or calling us Marines was to salute them in the field. We always referred to each other by nickname because calling each other Marine became a joke after awhile. "Marine, what do you want me to do now? I thought we were friends, why are you swearing at me?" Semper Fi! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Deanosaur, |

I used to get pissed when we'd go on humps. I always thought that they were soooooo stupid. I was like what's the point thats why we have helicopters, amphibs and trucks for. This is so dumb, wah wah wah, get the sand removal applicator for my ****. Then OIF came and .......
I still thought they were dumb because we rolled in amphibs etc. Just kidding I understand their purpose as far as getting in shape, unit integrity bla bla bla. I still don't like them. Especially since I'm short with tiny little spider legs. |

Man, I was just at Camp Geiger for ISLC and it was a trip. We were out doing the patrolling exercise and were in an OP at night, when we start to hear this shrill screaming. We're all like what the **** is that, one of the Marines in my squad was a combat instructor and let us know that it was MCT doing like a 5-mile Hike. It sounded like they were about to die. Funny as ****. |

Bwahahahaha! Don't worry, for about 95% of them it was the first and last time they would have done that. |

That's Mr. HollywoodMarine to you. |
Who you with? I started out with WPNS Co., and got out with Golf. If you say H&S, I will only know SNCO's and above. |

I went through SOI in July, and the rule was no flak and kevlar humps in the summer time. We would stow our Interceptors and kevlars in our packs. We'd sit out in the quad for hours on end waiting for the black flag to go down, once it turned red it was "Get your $h!+ on, Step it out." |

The hikes for me at SOI were bone crushing. Flak, kevlar, 80 pound pack...they were no joke. In my unit all our hikes have been flak and kevlar with an assault pack, the hikes are like up to 15 miles at this point. They are a **** load easier but I don't see the point of hikes that just completely **** your body up for like a week and then injure like 5% of the Marines that take part in it. When I was at SOI I met dozens of Marines who were bein medsepped because they got ****ed up on hikes. We're training for our deployment, we shouldn't be injuring Marines. I think the new hike policy is smart.

Hopefully you don't hit up Afghan then. Wasn't uncommon to hump 120 lbs plus of gear for days. Mortar rounds, 7.62, demo, smaws, IV bags, etc. on top of your weapon system; obviously flak w/ sapi's and kevlar. Oh and don't forget your chow and water. Also have to factor in taking the satcom off of the pogue RO. Good times.
