I just look at Camp Horno on google map satilite. There are still squadbays there. I thought that the corps was going to do away with them for better accomadations LOL. Somethings will never change. The Eclub is still there as the hole camp looks the same as it did when I left 1/9 in 84. At least from the satilite photos it all looks the same.
Forty years ago during Vietnam, Horno was a tent city housing Basic Infantry Training School (BITS) and Corpsman Field Medical School (FMS) on the east side of Basilone Road. When I visited there in the mid nineties I was shocked to see a Subway with nothing but open field behind it. Even the LZ at the top of the inner camp road was a place for model airplane enthusiasts to fly their gizmos.
As for Quonset Huts, we were in them in Boot at San Diego and then Infantry Training Regiment (ITR) at San Onofre where they were all you could see in both places. We didn't live in barracks until we were in Stagging Battalion at Mainside prior to going over. Talk about an upgrade in lifestyle.
