Back in 95-96, 3 team leaders in my platoon wanted to go the the Regimental scouts.
My question is, where there scouts in the regiment? This was in Horno in Pendleton. When i eas in 99, i only remember the recon platoon in the regiment but not the scouts.
Yes, years ago there were REGT Scouts. I served with the 2nd Marine Regimental Scouts for 3 years to include Desert Storm.
Another member is also correct.. there are scouts in the LAVS...but totally different story.
My platoon was a provisional unit created by the C/O of 2nd Marines (20 guys). We were all 0321 and went to little creek for amphib recon school. I attended the Scout sniper course at stone bay NC. Many of our guys graduated from Army Ranger school as well.
I know the 6th marines also had a scout platoon but it was even smaller than ours. I EASed in 92 so I don't know if the Units were maintained.
In short, we were ground pounders, not LAV riders. We answered directly to Col Hobbs C/O of 2nd marines at the time.
In 7th Marines the Reg Scout Platoon was often pulled from the STA platoons. I know in my platoon they chopped a few 8541's to Reg Scouts.
5th Marines at the time were a little different, at one point there was a Recon Platoon called Regimental Recon.
I'm not completely sure what MOS' manned the Recon Plt or if there were Recon guys in the 7thMarReg unit, but thats what we used to call them.
There was always confusion b/c there were scout platoons in the Regiment and some units were called Regimental Recon. But the Reg Recon acted more like a CAAT team and I don't think they were actual Recon guys.
I remember in the 1st Marines guard shack, the squad bay next to it, there was a sign that said Scout Reconnaisannce Platoon. Also, from the Leatherneck mag, issues somewhre in 95-98, there were a short articles about the Recon platoon of the regiment in Hawaii. There was also the regimental recon in 29 Palms.
