I was asked the other day about an officers dress hat that I didnt know the answer to so I was looking for some help. The rope design on top what is that called ? I know its significance and why its there but not the name ? Also the leafs on the brim why are they there ? THANKS FOR THE HELP
I feel ashamed for even remembering stupid sh*t like this, but:
Its called a "Quatrafoil". Not sure of the spelling. It was said to have first been used back in the day to distinguish Marine officers so that the Marine sharpshooters high up in the ship's riggings would recognize them and not shoot them by accident.
The leaves are, to my understanding, first attained by officers once they get to a field grade rank (i.e. Major and above).
