In '95 (might have been '97, memories are dim), I remember the last MarDet had been stood down...and then less than a year later as I deployed with 1st Bn, 3d Marines we were asked to provide a rifle platoon (minus) to serve six months on an Aircraft Carrier for just this type of mission.
I served with the MarDet, USS Midway (CV-41) for three years in the mid-80s. A very memorable tour, and I frequently think of it as the best tour I had in 24 years.
If MarDets do come back in some fashion, I think it's a good thing.
What do Marines have to put everybody else out of a job.Marines on Coast Guard Cutters sounds a little whack but we are a naval infantry and expanding our missions.
Now that the war is winding down and the Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force are still cutting back, I think the services are simply trying to find better ways to utilize the resources they have. If I were a Sailor or Coastie, I'd probably feel a heck of a lot safer knowing a Devil was standing at the ready while I inspected a suspect vessel.
Deanosaur, When I was stationed in Rota, Spain, as part of Marine Corps Security Force Company Europe, in 2003-2005, one of our primary missions was security of US and Friendly flaged ships transiting the Strait of Gibraltar.
A common mission might have us go as a squad out in a Spanish destroyer out in the Atlantic, do a small boat transfer to a huge MSC ship, then stand post for the transit of the STROG, then transfer back over to a US or spanish ship, or a German patrol boat and cruise back through STROG to Rota. Sometimes we got lucky and would ride a ship all the way to Souda Bay or Sigonella, get some libo and fly back to spain. Good times.

Think about it
and "Perform such other duties as the President may direct"
He can direct duties a Marine on ship and the Navy and Coast guard have to to support him
