I have some questions about the ship and ship's routine(s). Hopefully, someone onboard can answer them easily.
1. How does it ride? (i realize it prolly hasnt seen any bad weather) 2. Is there any word on what the daily ship routine will be like? 3. What Inport watches will be stood and who will stand them? 4. What underway watches will be stood and who will stand them? 5. Is 15 Chiefs really enough? I appreciate any info on these mundane topics! |

SWE:
1. Like a dream...no vibration at high speeds, no rock n roll, cuts through water sweetly. 2. Daily routine will likely be same as any other ship. 3 and 4. Still being finalized...will probably start out "heavy" and work our way down to "optimal". 5. Yes. Bob Montague Command Senior Chief USCGC BERTHOLF |

210QMC,
I think the real question most of the men and women of the Coast Guard want to know about the Bertholf, is how well does the coffee machine work? and how much coffee can it hold? |

Unfortunately that information is classified as well as proprietary to the ship builder.... so no soup for you! [/sarcasm]

210QMC, I know there will be IS' onboard and also I know there will be detachments of Linguists for every patrol. How long are the patrols going to be? And how many permanently attached IS' will be assigned to the cutter?
Thanks. |

I will be nice since it is kinda warm today. Answers like the one above is reason #1 why most coasties will not enter this or any forum when they do have questions. Sometimes people forget where they came from and loose their humility. I believe the question was directed at the command chief for the new National Security Cutter, If he deems that the question can be answered here I am sure he will do so. If not I know he would probably let me know or he would email me on my global or secure mail if necessary. My profile is full and anyone can find out who I am. I am still trying to figure out why you felt necessary to utilized sarcasm as supposed to being helpful. But honestly I do not care. I admire people who take time to answer questions to make sure people understand. We definitively need more of that from all ranks. Maybe, just maybe you can learn from the likes of Mightyz90_93, Chapwood and even Wray. But thanks for your input anyways, I am sure everybody now knows exactly how you are. BTW my questions still stand. Thanks. |

63J20 - I am going to ask that you contact the IS Rating Force Master Chief for your rate specific questions. Regarding linguists - I don't THINK we have "assigned linguist detachments", but I could be wrong. I really can't tell you how long a deployment will be, we haven't got our operational schedule yet. If you have other questions, bring 'em on.

Just wondering, any plans for one of these new cutters being based in New England, Boston maybe? I was on the Chase back when it was in Boston with the Hamilton. I'd love to show my sons one even if one was just visiting....not asking for any port call dates. Don |

So about the port calls and deployment; It would be great to know exactly what i am going to be doing for the next 3 years. I cant wait till July to get out of this frozen tundra i am stationed at now. 7" of snow for April 1st, what a cruel joke. I cant wait for that 80deg weather. Any BM3's currently stationed on the Waesche that could give me a call I would greatly appreciate it. You can find me in global.

Now wait a minute, I can be just as sarcastic as the next guy! It is too early in the process for you to believe anyone's asnwers about how many ISs will be permanently assigned. Thinking that there will be IS Linguist's TDY 'on every patrol' is probably not a good assumption. Reason #1: Understand the skill level of a 'linguist.' That skill level is miles above being able to help a boarding or ROA questions or knowing what is on a menu in a port call. It is significantly above the level of most native speakers. Most of us (me especially) couldn't even qualify as a linguist in ENGLISH. Now, an interpreter is a different story. (and those will be from many ratings, unlike Ling's which will be heavily derived form ISs) Reason #2: The skill sets of a CG IS Linguist is only helpful for a limited set of languages. On a patrol outside of that particular geographic area, those skil sets would not be used, at the Interp or Ling level. Now, as far as ISs - if we billet them there full time, they will be there for their RATING skill sets, not for their language skill sets. If you don't understand that, then go off line with MC Rochefort. |

Thank you MC. I know more now than a couple of weeks ago. I know that the fact that this is all new for the CG makes it uncertain at best. I do understand your point about the differences between the "Interpreters" and "Linguists" and I was just wondering about amount of billets on each cutter for us ISs. I do realized it is a little early for that but my questions were more to get "updates" if any as supposed to cold hard facts. Thanks again for the information MC. Now back to study more for the upcoming servicewide. |
