Just wondering if there are any plans to homeport any of the new NSC's on the East Coast? It would be great to have one or 2 in say, Portsmouth or Charleston. Maybe even FL somewhere. All i keep hearing is Alameda, which kinda sucks for us East Coasties that don't care much for Cali. Besides, by having some east Coast NSC's, one might think the CG could save money, with as expensive as Cali is and all.

Homeport decisions are wildly complex. In reality, what we want is close to irrelevant. We get of course some say, but then the members of congress get involved. We got to explain why we wouldn't simply replace cutter per cutter in existing homeports (remember there will be less cutters), then we may be pressed to make up for non CG BRAC issues, etc etc. Also, remember that the WMSLs are not the only thing coming on line. Also, if we keep to the crew rotation concept, we need 3 hulls tied to one pier. That means more space than some places have, more services, etc. I would suspect that there may be some eventually on the east coast, but who knows. There are not enough of them for every port. Realistically, there will only be 3 or maybe 4 ports with WMSLs. Right now, 6 ports have 378s.

I hear the old mighty rumor mill is saying that the Ship will be making an East Coast tour prior to going to the West Coast? Any truth to that..

Yes there is some truth to that rumor. No because of OPSEC we can not say were the Port of calls are.

There are 8 NSCs planned. Original homeports were to be Alameda (4), Hono (2), & Portsmouth (2). Crew Rotation Concept means 230 operational days per year, so having 2 at a site doesn't make much sense...both gone means no cutter for the maintenance staff or off-cycle crews to work on. 3 are approved to Alameda, and 3 will likely go to San Diego. Smartest deal would be 2 homeports only, since economy of scale puts all services at fewer locations. BUT NOT TO WORRY...Offshore Patrol Cutters are likely to be almost as large, and with 25 coming, both coasts, AK, and HI have some coming.

Really class response to a CPO....  Was the stop in Pensacola known in May when Chief Muldowney made his post? I doubt it.... First I heard about Pensacola was a couple days ago. |

The 8 Bertholfs will be 418 feet long, the upcoming 25 OPCs will be from 320-360 feet long. From what I have heard almost all of the same systems aboard the Bertholfs will be on the OPCs, just a smaller tighter fit. Is this true? |

You should check the date on your news story before you make a smart@#! post on here. I found not one news story dated in May stating her stop in Pensacola. As a matter of fact the only article's I found were dated the day before your post. Larry, When are you tour complete? I know you have been there for awhile. Chuck |

She was in Baltimore over the weekend, and open for touring Saturday and Sunday. Bertholf was docked in Fells Point which has lots going on after dark. Unfortuantely, I was unable to check things our due to a prior commitment. I hope that the crew enjoyed themselves and left a few crabcakes and some beer for us natives.
