Hopefully, if my wife gets it right, I'll have my ashes scattered from a USCG Buoytender in Sitka Sound in Alaska.

But, if she doesn't get it right and has me planted, I figure this ought to do:

Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

Extra 10 points if you can name the movie this was in and who quoted it.

Sorry, I can't tell you what movie this poem was uttered in. Do I get partial credit if I tell you that it was penned by Robert Louis Stevenson?

I believe that was the name of the movie and Robert Mitchum starred in it.

Yes Mark, I'll give you 5 points for knowing the author.

Ex_CG_GM - Never saw that movie, so I can't say for certain that it wasn't in it.

So as not to drag it out, that verse was quoted by John Wayne in the movie "They Were Expendable"

Shucks, it's nearly a brand new movie! Came out in 1960...... Smile

I'm 90+% certain it was in the movie. I believe that was the first time I had heard it. Mitchum received an Academy Award for best avctor for his role in the film.

Haven't thought too much about mine...My brother however, knew he was dying...He knew exactly what he wanted...He had his stone made and kept it close...When he died we put it on his grave...He was buried in a small cemetery in central California...His stone has just his first name and nothing else...His first name was: ALONZO

His wishes for services were to have none...However, my sisters insisted and had graveside services for him...I for one believe a person's wishes should be granted...If my sisters end up going to heaven, I hope the devil burns their assses with a flame thrower on their way up...

I think I want to have my ashes divided, half sprinkled into the sea off of New Hampshire and half sprinkled out by the reefline off the FL Keys. Won't really matter to me as I don't think I will have much to say at that point!

If I were to have a tombstone though, I'd like it to reflect that I've been a proud father to my sons, that I worked hard in trying to make the world a better place and that I tried to be a good person.

My husband wanted a military funeral. When his son came after my husband died he said "Es they won't allow a military funeral they say the Coast Guard isn't military"
Floyd had always told me that Vince Stauffer knew where the bodies were buried, so I called Vince, he said 'stay off the line' He called back and said Patty Murray (Senator from WA) refuses. Rex's Senator was Jessie Helms he said no. Finally I called the Coast Guard and a woman named CWO Doris Hull set the funeral up.

He is buried in the Blue Ridge mountains where his son lives so they bought in Pope Air Force and a CG recruiter. Big funeral, I've never been back but he got what he wanted the Coast Guard came through
