Hi Folks: I was wondering if anyone knows the current procedure to obtain a replacement retirement pin that is worn on your uniform. Lost mine during one of the many relocations since my retirement. Thanks in advance....Bill
I never recieved one either..but that's ok..i bought a doober ( a piece of cloth that covers the ajustable band on a ball cap that say CoastGuard) at the exchange..i wear it on the back of my cityworkers cover...sorta tells it all CG behind me ...my new job ahead of me..except at CGday when i wear it backwards with some shades the old school way sc
Retiring under Bender makes me think of all the Commandant's that have come and gone by since and I wonder if someone has ever listed them associated with what each was most remembered for. Bender, for better or worse will always be known as "Bender Blues" for his introduction of the new new CG Blue uniform (and the demise of the Cracker Jacks and denims). Yost, for instance is associated with "no more beards!"
Any one care to make a comprehensive list in like manner?
I am a "newbie" having retired only 22 years ago but one of the members of my CWOA Chapter retired in 1961 37 years ago. Ltjg Don Call, spent most of his career in the Great Lakes after WWII. I'm posting for him as he's 98+ years old.
I have been retired 20 years as of this past April. But a gentleman that I have a few beers with has been retired since 1968 (40 years ago)or right around there. He also spent quite a bit of time on the Great Lakes. He did thirty years in the Guard and retired as a W-4. Jack just had his 89th birthday. Hope I can do that.
retired in 72,seems like yesterday. A lot has changed since then, uniforms, ratings, females on ships, My son tells me I couldn't make it in todays military and he is probably right
Briefly scanning the Old Salts lineup looks like more than a few been around a while. I had Bender as a Lt as my ordnance officer, not the easiest officer to serve with, and that was during the reign of MacDiarmid and Johnson, two notable cases in aviation. My daughter baby sat Yost's kids when he was a Lt, pretty good officer. The best for me was Smith, was Commandant of Cadets when I was at the Academy, really helped our shooting teams. Also, gave me support when I had the Vietnamese Boat Fleet and he was Commandant.
Happy Birthday, Coast Guard, and Sir, your son probably meant that you could not tolerate all the left wing policies of today. During our time we carried our load and got lots of respect from the other services.
Retired in November 79. Still have the pin. Regardless of when we retired our USCG Family has tacked on another year to our history. Happy Birthday to past, present and future Coasties.
