All,

I'm gonna be sayin farewell to this fine Organization July 1st after 21+.

Does anyone know of any opportunities for a "real" job in the southeastern Ma area?

So if anyone has a lead on some work for a legacy BMC I'd be grateful for the intel.

thanks,

Buzz

Pull your letter....pull your letter....PULL YOUR LETTER!!

You are NOT near ready to retire if you don't have it nailed already. I'm serious. Pull your letter, beg, plead, cry, feign hardship, do whatever you can to stay at least until another promotion and be over 25 yos. If this is a forced out...then you better take good notes at TAPS.

Listen to the Master Chief! He’s giving you sound advice. By the way, you have a “real job”. Once you are a civilian, you will realize that.

29 years retired sends.

Do you have any Merchant Marine documentations?
Such as, Able Seaman or Master's license. The Steamship Authority in Woods Hole and the Hyannis boat companies would be places to look.

I had my first job after active duty lined up for two years before actually retiring. I stayed there for one month and moved to my present job. And I had this second job all ready before leaving the first.

I had all my Merchant Marine testing and licenses in hand before retiring.

Check out National Grid on monster.com. They have several postings for jobs in MA and RI. I retired in 01 as a BMC and was hired prior to retiring and have been with them for 7 years now. You can email me for specific info.

There is indeed a good life after the Coast Guard but only if you plan well ahead. Make sure you include your spouse and family in the planning processes and above all, be flexable and don't be afraid to start at the bottom all over again.

Find something with which you have a real passion for and follow it. Only then will you find true success.

Most important of all, do not, I repeat, DO NOT feel that you have to go through this alone. There are many out there who are ready to help you in this transition. The Department of Veterans Affairs, your county Veterans Service Officer, your state Department of Employment are a few. Don't be too proud to ask for help. It's all about networking in the real world, after all.

Good luck to you and let us know how you do. You can do it if you try!

Are you kidding me???

With respect Masterchief..........is that all you can muster? Here I am asking for some leads, advice and things of that nature and the best you can do is recommend to stay in? Surely there must be more you can offer.......

I have to tell you that I find your response dissapointing and offensive.

You seem to imply that "oh my god you're making a mistake!!"

OH COME ON!!!!

I'm a Boatswain's Mate for crying out load, I don't scare easily.

Look, I've done my bit for king and country now it's my time. Perhaps you're one of those lucky ones that found your life in the Coast Guard was the end all to beat all, but to me it's been a Job. It has been the best job I ever had; I even re-enlisted after being out for four years but just a job nonetheless. I have certain private, family reasons for retiring, but you didn't ask.

So much for a supporive chief's mess after retirement.

Holy Crap!!

I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. OK Background. Enlisted 1982 discharged under the reduction in force in 1986, Was earning 60k a year when I re-enlisted in 1990, go figure running boats is all I ever loved, been going strong since.

Now, beacause of previously mentioned private family reasons and some personal ones I am leaving.

I know what a "real" job is like. I'm not afraid, and I'm not unsure or uneasy about my abilities or prospects. As of this posting I have four Senior Management interviews in May.

I was not seeking an endorsement, simply that if anyone had any leads to plz advise

Keep your eye on the Marine Spill Response Corp. board (www.msrc.org). They have responder positions open up all the time. They only pay fair, but there is promotion possibility, and a strong retirement. For the most recent NE spot is one in Perth Amboy, NJ.

The work is easy and slow-bell, until somebody runs aground - obviously that ain't often.

I think you'll find that the CG considers you a liability, not an asset, after retirement. Wink

Hi Fred, Tipdog is right.

You were 2 years behind me at Station Menemsha. Are you still on Jarvis, or ISC? I did a BMC tour on RUSH from '93 to '96. I made 8 in 98, and retired for personal reasons in 2000 after 22+ years. Emotionally I was not ready to retire, but did so for family reasons. It took me quite a while to aclimate to civilian life.

So the only advice I can pass along is that 'they' were right. When you retire, your rank/rate stays behind. You become just a regular joe again. It took me several jobs and several years to find that I had a problem with immediate supervisors. Having been one for so many years, and having been a Chief for my last 10+ years, I wasn't good at being an employee. My most fun job was my first summer of retirement I was the dockmaster at the Portland Yacht Club. I had my launch operators license, I ran the waterfront and had 7 or 8 kids to coordinate on the launch schedule. It was fun, but only lasted one season. Long story short, in 2003 I got away from the Post Office, my last 'regular' job, and got my real estate license. What ever you find, just make sure you like it. Retirement is a good thing. Still pay attention at your TAP seminar, and get your VA Disability claim in well before you go on terminal leave ... and I'm sure you've heard all that anyway.

Cheers and best of luck to you!

Beer

I would consider it if the offer puts me on the Donal Trump lifestyle. Other than that, not a chance.

Have you tried USA Jobs ? I found an excellent job there and it is a great place to get you started. They have jobs all over the country and some overseas (if you want to get out of town again.) I would not specify what your area of expertise is in. I would only search in the area you want to retire in and see if you can fit the job profile. If you are interested in moving out West there are numerous career opportunities with Union Pacific BNSFand some of the other Rail Roads here and they love prior military (even BM’s.) Who knows you may even get a chance to supervise Gods Chosen Rate again and learn from the best. Big Grin
Good luck with the search and I hope this helps.

You'll do just fine. Just go into those interviews with the attitude that it is your job to loose. Apparently, you are qualified for the job, else they would not bother inviting you to interview. Be passionate with your responses and nail the interviews!

Hopefully, you will be in a good position to figure out which of the four senior mgmt. positions to accept rather than the other way around.
