I have a uncle that served on the CGC Apalachicola and he wanted me to get any information I could on it. Can anyone help me with this? Pictures, Information, anything. Thanks
Ex-USCGC APALACHEE is safeky moored in Cleveland, OH. She sailed under her own power with a "vintage" crew of Coasties from Oswego, NY to Cleveland. Left Oswego on 27 May; moored Cleveland 31 May. Check out the CG Tug Association at www.cg-tugs.org for more info.
My former ops boss and good friend Dave Cunningham took her there.. He was the last CO on her.. if you are interested on info, click on the link below, and follow the links for the pictures...
Go to: "cathycunningham.net"
then scroll all the way down and work your way up.... links to the pictures are on each days post.
I met Dave on the trip from Oswego to Cleveland; I was standing the Engine Room 4-8 watches. Dave and I were the two retired W4s on board; the rest of the crew included the following retired guys: W3 ENG; LCDR; BMC; & a HMC USNR (Doc did the cooking). An Active duty LT and SN; and the following guys did their 4+ and out: SN; EM3; and a USN ET3.
The plan is for the APALACHEE to stay in Cleveland as a USCG maritime museum - hopefully tied up on the west side of the old Whiskey Island CG Station. More info at CG Tug Assoc.. Right now the APALACHEE is tied up at Cleveland Shiprepair Co. on the Cuyahoga River, and will be there for a while.
I can't find a photo of it, but when I was a Cadet at Admiral Farragut Academy in Toms River, NJ, in the early 60's, we had a 63 footer. It was our Flagship if you will!! It was a great looking boat painted white with Blue Trim. We took it out only a few times a year, it really ate up a lot of fuel.
