Even though this is Virginia, this is a message to Democrats and Obama that America has admitted it's mistake.
quote:
CNN projects that Republican Bob McDonnell will win the race for governor in Virginia, reversing a trend of the state electing Democrats.
Republican Bob McDonnell ousted incumbent Democrat.

There is your 2010 message!
quote:
McDonnell, a 55-year-old former state attorney general, will be the first Republican to win the state's highest office in 12 years. Republicans will win races for Virginia's lieutenant governor and attorney general as well, CNN estimated.

GOP leaders are also hoping to oust New Jersey's embattled Democratic governor in the other major statewide race of the night. The two gubernatorial contests have been deemed by some analysts as the first major referendum on President Obama's administration.

Still too early to tell but Christie is leading by 11 points in NJ. Still a lot of time for Corzine to find those missing ballot boxes.

ips, you know this is historical.......and not necessarily a 2010 game changer...

Virginia has historically (past 24 years) gone the other way in terms of governorship when the party elected the previous year sits in the WH.

This is but one reason I predicted VA to elect a republican governor.

VA is still blue however. 2 Democratic Senators and a strong democratic base in N VA.

The dems backs are not broken and I find it early to say this is a sweep...a sweep of what? History?

Democrats will spin this EVERY way from Sunday, but Obama went out of his way to help BOTH governors. He abandoned VA when he realized his coat-tails weren't helping. Then he went all out, and like the media said, "tried to save NJ for the Dem governor". He may have failed.

This would be huge for Republicans. NJ is about as blue as a state can get. For a Republican to kick out an incumbent... Huge! I just hope it's not within 2% because I don't trust Democrats any further than I can throw them, not to find missing uncounted ballots. Roll Eyes

Even beadie-eyed Carville said this will help Republicans and will scare Democrats. James Carville said this can't but help hurt the other social agenda items, with Democrats fearful for their jobs in 2010. Much less likely to vote for something that's likely to wind up in a backlash. AND it's looking like health care is going to be pushed into next year, making them even more skiddish.

Spin is on the way however. Republicans will now sit back and watch all the spin-mystering. Wink

I didn't base my argument on spin, I based it on historical fact.

Hell I even said R for VA.

but...I don't think 2 states will shape 2010...if that was the case, pundits/FOX/CNN etc. should just go home.

There is more to national politics than VA or NJ.

That's not historical fact. That's a historical curiosity; not fact.

That's like saying, "No team has ever beaten Roger Clemens when he pitched on Monday, after losing on the previous Sunday". It's a fact (as in history; but not as a predictor) but not a relevant fact, in determing the future impact. Roll Eyes

You toss that out, as if it was a foregone conclusion. It was not, until up to a short time ago.

Yes, that's spin!

History and historical voter trends are just one tool available (there are others) to predict the future ips, especially something as predictible as an election.

What I am not saying is that this "will not hurt democrats"

It will.

However, I don't think it is a precursor to 2010 writ-large.

The thing is is that YOU HAVE to see this as a HUGE win...

I however, do not, given my independent, moderate status. Like I said earlier I voted for McDonnell, He was a stronger candidate, he is from my area (first Hampton Roads area Governor) politically speaking, and he has great ideas.

Deeds had nothing!

I didn't vote for him for his religious stance...since he hardly ever brought it up (smart candidate, not hard core ideological right wing christian crap which to me is silly).
I voted for local issues...not for a great big national referendum on Obama...and the dems...

While it is en ancouraging night for republicans, I think it is WAYYYYYYYY too early to predict 2010...

but see, you have to think you can predict 2010 on two governor races...or you are not ipscone.

When I hear overly confident James Carville saying, "I have a pit in my stomach" over the outcome in NJ, Democrats are looking at 2010.

He said this will "scare" Democrats who are up for election in 2010. Now! This is not "me" or "Republican pundants". This is Democrat James Carville.

To politicians in power:
  • There is one thing that is more important than Health Care Reform
  • There is one thing more important than the economy
  • There is one thing more important than Afghanistan and Iraq
It's getting re-elected in 2010. It might be different, if the voting public was 100% behind the administration's policies. But the reality is "on issues" Obama polls below 50%. And the public "opposes" most of his agenda items. That will scare the bajeebers out of Democrats who are up for election.

Even now, everyone is saying that Health Care is dead for 2009. ALL pundants (from both sides) are in agreement on how this affects 2010.

WOW! James Carville just said, "If Democrats don't pass Health Care soon, they will get slaughtered in 2010

to turn your argument on your head, "scare" is a good thing...it motivates.

Like I said a long time ago....The republicans need a message...and might have one in early 2010...

quote:
This is Democrat James Carville.

since when have you listened to a dem.. Wink

Not passing health care will destroy the dems, just like I heard ole James say...

Put your chips on healthcare, not 2 states.

quote:
It's getting re-elected in 2010.

I agree...a politican never looks out for their constituents...just their job (looking for votes).

More than you imagine. Some think I only listen to Rush. Fact is, I never do. I listen quite a lot to the opposition. I weigh what they say, according to my views. I don't need to listen to like minds, to know my position. It's built-in. Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer... or something like that.

You have a point. James Carville just made another comment. In addition to what he said above, he just said, "Democrats could lose both chambers of the house, in 2010", if they don't pass Health Care Reform. And remember, 60% of America "opposes" ObamaCare. And bluedog democrats want to keep their jobs. So Democrats are caught between a rock (Republicans) and a hard spot (voters).

Upset In! It's been called by Fox and CNN.

Christie takes Gov. for NJ by 5%. Now that's huge since Obama came to the rescue to save NJ for Corzine.

I'm thinking in 2010, Dems won't want Obama anywhere near them.

PS: Bloomberg is also the predicted winner in NY.

Well not really true...

It was Governor Florio of NJ and his stupid Insurance Reform that sunk many Dem Governor chances in the late 1980's across the U.S.

I remember that clearly because Loftus Dem Speaker of the House in Wisconsin was running in Wisconsin and I personally had the satisfaction to nail his azz to the wall in front of the UW Student Guest Speakers council (of which I was a member).

He was blindly supporting Florio and his stupid Insurance reform......which actually pushed Insurance rates through the roof in NJ. It really pizzed me off that he didn't even understand the Florio program, he was just following the Party line.

It was beautiful, Loftus only could repeat his prepared answers and couldn't depart from the script. You could see it in his eyes the chance just slipping from his grasp, one idiot answer after another to my three questions.

I remember that day and I will always be a fervent believer in Democracy after it's sweet taste (heh-heh). Loftus was a total idiot and I did Wisconsin a Public Service that day. Cool

Anyhow, NJ has set a trend before.

I will cede to your experience...

in that case, local was national...in terms of gov races.

my example was meant to say federal pres/congressional elections...and yes, your point is noted.

Great example.
