I've heard from many post on here that the 820th is a pretty bada$$ assignment to have and that there troops there are true to force ground pounders. I wondered how hard core there K-9 section is. Does there K-9 do the same special missions as do the regular cops there?
Yes, the 820th is where you go before you can be considered a true cop. Please don't wear your beret without having gone there, if you already are, ensure you replace it with a patrol cap asap.
Be sure you complete your class XI stratosphere flight physical as you'll make a few HALO jumps with your dog. Just prepared to not get too attached to your dog. Legend has it that you have to shoot your dog once you've raised and trained it from a puppy. Don't worry, you'll get a better cybernetic one.
Thats a pretty nice answer coming from a TSgt to an A1C sir. Your help was greatly beneficial to my military career and my continued service to excellence. Thanks.
Awww, A1Cs don't have any sense of humor these days? Don't take it personally. I like poking at 820th guys and guys who think they are the end all, be all. It's cool, even the 820th guys can laugh at thsemselves, so don't act so insulted. I'm sure someone K9ish will come and answer question. Maybe. Or maybe you should edit your post to make more sense.
"Do they do the same special missions as do the regular cops there?" What "special" missions are you talking about? Dog handler out of Fairchild AFB gets attached to USMC unit during heated times in Falluja. PTSD along martial/personal problems drive him to suicide. Dog handlers out of 820th are more of a bother to their cc's because the wild dogs of their AO outside Bucca make K9s ineffective as they always want to chase wild dogs. Note: they are patrolling secured villages. So, which kind of "special" mission were you referring to again?
Use the "Find" function at the top of the forum. Type K9 in the search block. You will get over 5 pages of topics.
As far as deploying, K9 from all different units/ squadrons / commands can get assigned to the Army or Marines. This is something the career field in general does when asked. Being 820 doesn't have much to do with it in the grand scheme. When I was at F.E. as K9, in 1.5 years time, 50% of the deployments were with the Marines, and the other half were with the USAF. Where I am now, the last 2 have been Army. The next 2 are 1 Army, and 1 Air Force. Its really luck of the draw, or luck of the Program Manager for that matter.
When picking a base if you make it to K9, the only thing you need to concern yourself with is the garrison mission. If you can find a base that makes K9 its very own section, then that would be a good start. So simply from that perspective, the 820 would be a good choice.
