bah humbug. guess ill just make the best of it.
All I can say is "Whynot Minot"
You my friend have been given a gift from the Air Force Gods......STUDY STUDY STUDY......thats all you will have time to do 7 months out of the year!
Whats your AFSC?

study? so im guessing i have alot of time for college
also is minot a prp base?
what are the chances of getting deployed? and how long are the tours.
will i have my choice of base once the tour is over?
Why not Minot? Freezins the reason! Naw, Minot is not all that bad, except if you like beaches and suntans.
As stated before, study and get promoted.

Did you say "Mountains" LOL
Yep! You will have a blast!
There is no set tour length in Minot, like there isn't in the vast majority of stateside bases. So no, you don't get your choice of base once the tour is over.
Basically, after a year on station, start looking at the overseas bases that have the highest priority for manning, start putting them on your dream sheet, and pray.
The type of duty will depend on whether you go to the 5th Bomb Wing - in which case you will do flightline and Weapons Storage Area (WSA) security - or the 91st Missile Wing - in which case you will do missile field work.
Chances are you're going to the 5th. They've just had some vancancies...
Hours will be either 8- or 12- hour shifts (really 10- and 14- hours long), most likely 12s if you are in the 5th. Missile duty shifts are so varied it's useless to talk about them. You can be working anywhere from 12 hour shifts to three day tours.
If you have to ask if this is a PRP base, then you probably shouldn't know the answer...
Most cops deploy nowadays. Minot cops will deploy less than most.
There are no mountains in Minot. If you think you see one, that's just a pile of mud and snow. Or a really big mosquito nest.
Duty can be pretty staid. On the other hand - as others have said - it is a great opportunity to learn the basics of your job and start working on some education. Facilities at Northern Tier bases, like Minot, tend to be above average.
Most people complain about Minot, but I spent three years in Grand Forks (practically next door) and actually enjoyed it.
It may be a cliche, but it really is what you make of it. I remember being in Comiso (Sicily), working a 6-on 4-off shift, with cheap ass beer, awesome food and wine, and nude beaches within cycling distance. People still complained about the post.

Minot isn't(or wasn't) all that bad if you put a little effort into it. Yes the duty is boring and cold hits new levels there. There is(or was) a large college in town with all the associated amenities. Admittedly, it was 25years ago I was there. Get a car and get around! The base is physically isolated enough to make personal transport a neccessity. Only did 1 year there and after that, off to Europe. Deployed somewhat frequently(PanamaX2, Egypt once). The locals aren't bad if you get to know them. They just kind of get used to the guys from base crapping on them expect it and return it. Prepare for the cold! It is actually deadly up there! Actually a rather fun time if you get around and relax.
I also just got stationed here not too long ago it's not that bad I actually like it so far yea its cold so what. I'm from Daytona and I'm not complaining... yet. Just try to make the most of it that's all you really can do now.
hey SF_TR00p... you wouldn't happen to be an ALPHA FLIGHT ANTEATER from the 5SFS that goes by the name MUNG TONGUE!?
Is Col. Steve Asher still the head cop up there. I knew him as a SSgt at the HQ PACAF Elite Guard at Hickam.
He was at Malmstrom...he retired this summer

Not sure you're into outdoors, but there's plenty to do, from where you're located. If you like to snow ski, there's a couple of good elevation slopes in the state, more so up near Winnipeg to the Saskatchewan border and over a 1000' vertical at Rapid City, SD.
If you're not into outdoors, there's actually culture in Minot. Friends(KC-135 pilot) transferred there 20 years ago and stayed, got involved in the community, put their kids through NDU, and enjoy life there.
It's repeated numerous times, but it's what you make of it, as to how your life turns out, while you're stationed at Minot.
"VIA UNA COR UNUM"
Col Peter Micale is the new SF Group CC at Minot.
Col Micale is the CC for 91 SFG. I just wanted to clarify since there is 2 different Wings here at Minot.
I didn't want to make another topic about this, but I was told that if I put Minot as a base option that I would definitely get it.
Is that true?
My wife and I are both quiet and reserved, so we think a base like Minot would be nice.
There is no guarantee in the Air Force, but chances are pretty good that if you put in for Minot (and/or Malmstrom/F.E. Warren) you will get it.
They used to have five-year controlled tours to Minot and other northern-tier bases. I don't know if they still do, but it may be something to look into. Specially if you have kids. It may also raise your chances of getting them even a bit more.
Which is another reason I am looking into this base. I have a daughter, and I noticed Minot was voted to be the best place to raise a family in 2010.
Were you ever stationed at Minot or Malmstrom?
If you ask for a 20th AF base (Minot, Malmstrom or FEW) you will, in all probability, get one of them. If you go on to equal and Minot is open and you volunteer, I fully expect you'll be the first guy to the trough on that one so I don't think you'll have to worry about someone stealing it away from you.
Minot is good assignment, but it is small town America and it is coooollllldddd in the winter.
81150 I PUT IN FOR MINOT IN 1973 STAY THEIR 3 YEARS MISSILE SECURITY AND I AM STILL COLD ,BACK IN ALABAMA HAVENT WARM UP YET.
