I am curious as to how many of the SF Airman got stationed at a base on their “Dream Sheet” for there first Base after Tech School? Which base was it? Was it your number one? Didn't you like it, and why?

My number 1 overseas pick was Ramstein. I got Ramstein on my orders but they sent me to Vogelweh and I'm extremely grateful. No flight line!!

I dont really know much about AFSF, what is it good to get a base without a flight line? |

generally, there are "crappy" posts in SF. Sitting on the flightline watching broken birds for 12 hours at a time is pretty mind-numbing to most, as is gate guard duty. What most people want to do is patrolman type stuff. If you go to a base with no flightline and civilians run your gate, then all you have are law enforcement patrols.

Oh, and to answer your question:
I noticed something while in. When I was stationed at Dyess, it seemed like everyone and their mother was from somewhere in TX. When I was stationed at Hickam, many AD personnel were local and had family in the area. Now that I'm stationed at Fairchild, I finally see it isn't a coincidence that so many people are from Idaho, Washington and Oregon. Here's what I was told. Want to get to a certain region? Place all the bases of that region on your dream sheet. If your dreamsheet are all the bases in TX and nothing else, there's very good chance you're ending up somewhere in TX. BUT, if you aren't willing to take but two of the bases in TX and you start putting other bases around the country, the assignment people will read that as you having no particular preference to a region and they'll send you anywhere. Now this isn't fool proof. The needs of the Air Force will ALWAYS come first and if they need people in Minot and your number is pulled, it won't matter what is on your dream sheet. But just know that they try or else the first paragraph of this post wouldn't be true. |

Yeah, no flight line = all (mostly) LE and deployment taskings. Or a missile field...
When I came in, I wanted to get away from home...and I did. Now, as the silly dust collector my wife has hung in our kitchen says, "Home is where the Air Force sends you". I dont know where we will settle when we are done, we haven't stopped looking around yet. I got my number one dream sheet choice out of Tech school, and have been pretty fortunate over the years. My current base is the first one that I didnt want by name, but I am in the geographic area that I wanted. Remember two things. The needs of the AF come first, and a base is what YOU make of it. Get out of the dorm, or "Out of the bubble" and go see things and do stuff. Dont fall in with the video game all break crowd or the underage drinkers. You will only go broke and get in trouble that way. Take classes, go on Outdoor Rec or MWR trips, volunteer, whatever. Good luck... |

After BMT, as a SF you will go across Lackland AFB to the SF tech school, for a time than to Camp Bullis (right down the road), for a few more weeks then you go to where the AF needs you the most! You Are Not FORGOTTEN! |
