I'm prior Army and National Guard. I was an airborne infantryman and cavalry scout. I would like to get a slot in the Air Force Reserve in a CATM slot.
Does anyone know anything about the school?

I know a little, but will know more next month when I'm there.

What, 10 weeks, Mon-Fri, learn all the small arms weapons systems, learn how to run a range, learn how to instruct....who cares, its San Antonio and 10 weeks off from my civilian job.

To the original poster. In order to be CATM, you'll have to be security forces first. I read in the school requirements that you have to be a 5 level in SF first, but in the Guard and Reserves it can be a little different. We have an E-4 (prior army infantry) who just graduated SF tech school a week ago and is now in CATM school.

Other than that, ask questions and I'll try to answer them without giving away anything that may be relevent to actually material. But that shouldn't be too hard. Seems fun and pretty relaxed so far.

As guard/reserve you can go immediately into CATM. As far as I understood it from the 75% of my class which WAS guard/reserve [back in 2006], it is not hard to get a slot. Talk to a recruiter and you'll be on your way as soon as they can get you a class date. Within 90-120 days I would estimate..

Not downplaying importance of CATM. I love it and it is a lot of fun. Just pointing out that we need CATM folks in the Air Force and it is not a hard AFSC to move into.

In the Guard and Reserves you can be waived for the 5 level requirement, but on AD, I don't think so.

We've had people from Guard/Reserves come straight from SF Tech School, whereas the lowest ranking person in class, an A1C about to pick up SrA, still had to meet the 5 level requirement. This isn't to say it's not doable, but I'd say you'll find yourself waiting to get your 5 level before going CATM.

Good school though. I've enjoyed it.

The five level may be a MAJCOM or local base imposed requirement.

The Air Force Enlisted Classification Directory indicates for entry into 3P0X1A/B, qualification in and possession of 3P031/51.

It would be the 3-skill level award of AFSC requirement the Air Guard would have to bypass. The Air Force enlisted member can’t perform any 3P duties as a member of Security Forces career field without award of 3P031.

Perhaps the 5-skill level confusion is results from "SEI 312, Combat Arms. Requires prior qualification in and possession of AFSC 3P051B, or 3P171. Award SEI to AFSC 3P0X1, when personnel upgrade from AFSC 3P051B to 3P071."

Just an FYI because it's similar. "SEI 311, Military Working Dog Handler. Requires prior qualification in, and possession of AFSC 3P051A, or 3P172A. Award SEI to AFSC 3P0X1, when personnel upgrade from AFSC 3P051A to 3P071."

The SEI doesn't prevent the 3-skill level from getting trained to perform or prevent the performing of AFSC alpha shredout duties.

Combat Arms Training and Maintenance. Also refered to as Combat Arms Instructors.

In short, they're the folks who instruct the rest of the Air Force in weapons training.
