It's not a bad article. People outside of the AF tend to not realize how rough all of this can be on the troops (and most of them haven't done anything wrong).
Still, "lure" them to Minot!?
I though they just handed you a set of orders and a pair of Mukluks as the nice assignments gal asked you "Do you like to hunt and fish?"
Orders just dropped here for 12 SSgts to Minot, FE and Malmstrom. Dont know whats better, a long hot summer, or long cold snowy winters. I'll take the winters...

For you younger Airman there was a time that all Nukes fell under a single command, Strategic Air Command (SAC). Back in the day they didn't make mistakes in SAC, they knew our country depend on them and if they screwed up family and friends could die.

Only the best in the Air Force went north!
They are going back to the SAC days with the Global Strike Command hopefully that will help a bit. People tend to relax when you don't have the huge threat from Russia and when people relax people make mistakes
Minot wasn't all that bad of a place in the 80s. The trick was you had to get out and do something, not just sit around the barracks and whine "I'm bored". Town of minot is about 12miles out, car definitely needed. But, at that time, we all had a clue what our mission was,and it was constantly reinforced. F.E. Warren- that's why I got out, I hope the place has improved.
My son and 4 of friends at Tech School were just assigned to Minot. My son actually put it on his "dream sheet". We live in North Idaho and he will be driving his truck there. He is really looking forward to going! I can only respect him for his upbeat attitude and willingness to serve wherever he is needed.
