LOS ANGELES — San Bernardino County has reached a $1.5 million settlement with an Iraq war veteran shot three times by a sheriff's deputy following a high-speed chase.
Under the agreement, Air Force Sgt. Elio Carrion will dismiss his lawsuit against the county and then-Sheriff Gary Penrod.
Carrion was a passenger in a Corvette that led deputies on a chase in 2006 that ended in Chino, about 40 miles east of Los Angeles. Former Deputy Ivory Webb fired three rounds at Carrion when he was on the ground, hitting him in the chest, leg and shoulder. Carrion was hospitalized for several days.
Webb was acquitted of attempted voluntary manslaughter and firearm assault.
The settlement was announced this week but still needs approval from the county Board of Supervisors.
Not by any means suggesting that it was ok for the Deputy to shoot an unarmed person laying on the ground, but anybody know why an active-duty SF Sgt. would be a passenger in a car that ran from the police???
I don't have any friends that would run from the police....
Sounds like Carion had every reason to sue and was awarded his just due, but seriously, what are active duty SF members doing riding with people that run the police.
State, this happened a while ago and , maybe someone could help me if I'm wrong. I believe the senerio was he was home on leave, was with his friend making a beer run or something like that when, forever reason, his friend called "rabbit" and he was an unlucky passenger. The story said he had no way of knowing what his friend was going to do. GUYS... Am I telling it right??? As I said, it's been a while.
He was just coming off a deployment to Bucca, my team relieved them. I never met the guy but in light of the Jacobson incident and then this one, made for a bad season for SF. It's bad enough the Iraqi's were trying to get us, now we have to contend with our own criminal justice system? GREAT!
Certainly says something about knowing your friends from days gone by huh?
