Any ideas on how to get one?
Not that I want one, but find as I have gotten older, and the fun things that happen as we do get older, that I honestly find it hard to do anything more than basic stuff, cause of problems with my asthma and lung problems but also disk and hip problems.. Oddly like my father before me, he got his retirement, but it was not easy, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes (possibly related to Agent Orange?). Let along having to deal with some issues of a mental nature. Been trying to finish up 5 more good years with the Army Reserve, I was Army Guard until it came to a head and I had to take a break. The break helped deal with several emotional issues I have had and developed. But find my back has gotten worse, hips as well, and some days I can barely breath cause of throat/lung problems. So far I have been okey with my Reserve unit, but why I went back to my original MOS of 71L/75B now 42A, but now someone noticed I have an 11B SMOS and sorry, I am far from fit to do that MOS any more. I find the dry cold here in Fairbanks area to be hard to deal with. Dust especially.. Let along having people depend on me, and my back goes out, or ... I start crying cause of some things in my past, several friends killed, several by suicide and others by accident or murder. Drove ambulance for four years and it took its toll (volunteer). So in ending, am I nuts, or what? |

Nobody here can make that judgment, for sure. Do you have a doctor or therapist? If not, that's where you start.
If someone in your chain of command tries to put you in a 11B slot (because it's your secondary MOS, that's possible), you can and should request a referral to an MTF for medical evaluation regarding fitness for that particular job. I'm assuming you're talking about being deployed and expected to take on normal 11B patrol/combat-related duties. There are also assignments for 11Bs, depending on your rank and experience, that would make it less likely for you to do that. If you're getting along OK as is and able to work in your primary MOS, don't go anticipating the worst. Just because someone notices your secondary MOS doesn't necessarily mean you're in for drastic changes. When you get ready to retire from the Reserves, you can gather all your medical data (COPY EVERY PAGE OF YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS!!!) and consider applying to the VA for disability. Keep up to date on changes in disability - there is movement afoot to combine the processes for medical discharge and/or disability. Good luck. |
