I sure could use some advice. I'm a retired Army CW3 and just left a job with a Fortune 100 company after 17 years. I've got a good sized 401k that I was smart enough to place in the company's "guaranteed fund" prior to stock market crash. I haven't lost a dime. Now, it's time to roll it over out of the company....I've contacted USAA where I've been a member for 30 years...but I'm hesitant to pay them $65 a month for 12 months for financial advice. I want my savings protected at all costs - I'm 55, starting a consulting business, and don't feel I'll need to start taking monthly bleed offs of the money for 5 to 7 years.....has anyone got any advice for good, conservative investment that will let me sleep at night?

Thanks!!!

Most banks and brokerage firms and mutual fund companies offer free IRAs that you can roll your 401K over to. We have our IRA and my wife's SEP-IRA at one of them. Per rules, I can not make a recommendation of any firms. I use Morningstar to analyze mutual funds. You might just want to move it to a discount brokerage firm money fund for a bit while you decide on investments.

Numbers,

Not knowing your age, retirement assets, financial needs, risk tolerance etc., specific recomendations would be at best looked upon with suspicion.

I only have one recommendation, based on the assumption you have 401k rollover assets in excess of 100k. Deposit it in a money market mutual fund with a fund company located in Valley Forge, PA. Subsequently, you will have the ability to obtain a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) prepared financial plan for a one time payment of $250. Your input wheather oral or written will help both you in getting a well tailored set of actionable recommendations based on your needs.
