what are the parameters of the status of veterans owned small business, or disabled veteran owned small business, are they the same? also, there is some kind of agreement with the govt, something like, they have to award a certain percentage of contracts to veterans owned small business in that sector? what are those parameters, or does someone have a link to that?

I used to be in a DOD program, and never found it to be the best way to do businss. I was required to bid on products that I would often sell 12 months later, and to process all payments via credit card. That meant a 2% fee on every transaction with the bank.

The one transaction I did on open account, the Major who was my customer could not get them to pay me per the requirements the DOD sets.

I choose not to contiue to sell to the US Government as the cost of sales where too high. I did not use the Veterans programs, but set the business up with my wife owning the majority and qualified that way. She was my partner, and it was legit. I am just not sure I would go that way again.

Just my two cents worth on doing businss as a small business with the government.

Dave, so you are saying that setting it up as a womens owned small business, which is what you did, gives the same benefits, or some? when you say you wouldn't set it up again that way, does that mean you would set it up as a service connected small business owner? I am going to look at the above link, but does this pertain to local town govt.s? say, our hometown is doing infrastructure rebuilding (bridges etc) would a disabled veterans owned business have to be considered, rather than another non veterans business? my dad has a concrete cutting business, and as we might partner up, i am wondering if it will make the local city oficials have to use him over another, or how it works in that instance/ thanks for your replies.

Part of it was timing. The benefits of Veteran owned business was not as good as a women owned business at the time. I would have to study the current regulations to tell you the advantages. I am in the computer business and at the time we could bid a break even price and know when they ordered the price would be less. Now the machine just get more powerful.

I would use the SBA and its Score program to help you identify the opportunity you will have as a Disabled Vet Owned business. That way when you make a decision you know what is best for you and the type of business you are seeking.
