Training

The five-month course covers basic aircraft-maintenance fundamentals. Other advanced courses cover specific aircraft systems and provide troubleshooting skills. The courses are taught at the Aviation Technical Training Center. The Coast Guard also utilizes commercial training for advanced courses. An AMT may apply for the Aviation Maintenance Technology Program, which provides personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to fill billets requiring a high level of technical expertise. This program provides up to two years of full-time college attendance to achieve a minimum of an associate’s degree in aeronautical technology.

I read this info for the AMT description on USCG.mil, I am wanting to find some more info on the Aviation Maintenance Technology Program but have been unable to find anything on the internet. Does anybody have any experience with this program or know where I can find some more information? I would much appreciate it.

Thanks

Chad,

This program sends one to two selectees per year (based on funds available) to Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana). There are some other schools that have a comparable program, but most attend Purdue. The competition is based on a resume and command endorsement letter which are reviewed at headquarters. A panel will screen all applicants and select the individuals they feel are best qualified. When I was selected I had an associate's degree, my FAA A&P certificates, and a few years worth of good evaluations from my command. The A&P certificate is important because the college credits awarded for the certificate amount to the equivalent of an associates at Purdue, so the selectee can focus primarily on bachelor's degree curricula. The program is available to all E-5 and above in the AMT and AET ratings. While at school the selectee still receives full base pay, allowance for housing, and all medical and dental benefits. Books and lab fees are reimbursed, and tuition is paid in full by the USCG. The degree is in aeronautical technology and covers aircraft electrical, electronics, powerplants, composite structures, material processes, safety, infrastructure, digital systems, computer aided graphic design, and all of the associated core subjects like psychology, algebra, trig, calculus, physics, presentational speaking...and a lot of other classes.

CPO Langlois,

Thanks for the info it cleared up my questions.

If you don't mind me asking what was your associates degree in? I plan on working towards a degree myself in order to apply for OCS down the road, Which is somewhat of what sparked my interest in this program. However you do not need a degree to get into this program do you?

Thanks for all your help!

No, no degree is required to apply. I picked up my associate's degree from University of Phoenix through a program the Coast Guard has. It is just an associate of arts, and it's another cost free education program. You can take all of the CLEP exams, and those coupled with your class "A" school diploma from the USCG is usually pretty close to the degree. I only went through this program so that I could show the selection board for the AMT program at Purdue that I was serious about my education ( I hope that made sense to you). Whatever progress you can make towards showing the folks at headquarters you are the right choice for the school is important. Chase that associate's degree, and maybe mix in some technology classes if you can enroll in some wherever you are. Don't forget to visit your ESO (education sevices officer) at your first unit and check into tuition assistance. There is a lot of money available to you to make off duty education possible. Don't think you have to foot the whole bill out of pocket. The great American public will help you out with your education.

CPO,

Thanks again for the info! You have been so helpful, I am definitely going to look into TA and try to get some classes done that way. That was initially my plan before I found out about this program! I am thinking to wait till after A-school to start classes so I can concentrate on learning as much as I can, this may be a good idea and it may not. I will think over it more after I am at my first duty station.

As far as technology courses go, if they like to see that sort of class, I will take as many as I can. I worked IT from the time I was 14 till 18 and am pretty knowledgeable in computers and programming aspects of technology so hopefully it will help me get ahead a little bit.

Thank you Again

Whetsel
