I am getting ready to enlist in the coast guard and i was wondering what isthe lifestyle of an AMT is like. Is it fun or is just get up and try to not forget your knowledge and fix the aircraft. what is an airstation like is it busy

Well if they ever come out with a Aviation Subsistence Specialist rate..i may partition to come back in..then again maybe not..they do have the best equitment though..loved opa locka/miami's galley.
You have your daily hurry up and wait. Other times you fix planes all day just to go out and fly on them. Some days you have nothing to do but buisy work. Then there is the endless amount of training you have to do. Training room and computer mandated training. But, i'm sure that training is everywhere (well I hope the boat world is doing all the same training). Oh yeah, you have to keep up all your quals. Even if you are on a C-130 and you have multipule qualifications, unlike the helo's they have qualification. Thats the jist of an airstation. For the AMT lifestyle. You turn wrenchs, rivet patch work, little paint here, little oil there, then fly a few hours there, and a touch and go there. You get the point. It's fun at times, and other times not so much. (tank diving not so much fun).

Your profile shows you in Arizona. If possible and you want it bad enough, I'd suggest making a run over to Air Station San Diego (or LA) to see what air station life is like. Getting an up close perspective is the best way to see if aviation is for you. Your recruiter should be able to set up a visit via the aviation Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO). If not, shoot me an email with contact info and I'll see what I can do. John.H.Long@uscg.mil

Not necessarily, just the closest to where you're at. Each air station (or any unit for that matter) in the CG has something different to offer. Just depends what your interests are.

Nope, and yup! It just takes a phone call.
Just so you know up front, the trip will likely be on your dime. The other option is wait till you get to your first CG unit then visit an air station.
