so i ve been reading a lot on this board and it seems to be a fountain of information. ive had many of my questions answered without even asking. so any way on to a question that i cant find the answer to. im interested in the amt rating. what question is what is the security clearance needed for the rate and what is invloved in obtaining it? is it something i need to do before the airman program? i thought that someone said that the clearance was only for the flight mechanic qualification.

All aviators must have a security clearance(SF-86) submitted before attending A-School. 4 months before your class convene date you will be assigned to an Air Station for the Airman program. I haven't read anywhere that the clearance paperwork must be submitted before attending the Airman program. However, I would suggest getting the flight physical and clearance completed as soon as possible.

Not sure were your located at but either look me up in the global or talk to your servicing OS about clearance. There are new directives out that it does not matter what your rate is you have to have a clearance.

Here's a little cut/paste action:

Qualifications: AMT

An aptitude for mechanics is required. School courses in algebra, geometry, electricity, machine shop and mechanics are very helpful. The member must be able to pass the Aircrew Candidate Physical. Members of the AMT Rating must be able to obtain and hold a Secret Security Clearance.

That being said, even if you did fill out an SF-86, you may not have been given a clearance to the "secret" level. Your local OS can verify your status for you. If you need to upgrade your clearance you may have to re-submit your SF-86. Hope this one helped...

Some of the questions in the Security Clearance paperwork deal with finances. If you even think that you might possibly be past-due on a bill or if you have a shakey financial background, do not try to smooth it over. Answer the questions honestly and use the remarks column to explain what happened to your finances. It's not a sin to have some money problems but it's a huge headache if the Security Center folks find out that you didn't openly & completely list your financial problems. An example: an aspiring AMT3-wannabe filled out his paperwork but "figured" that he'd be able to pay off his overdue debt long before the paperwork reached the Security Center review. WRONG! His integrity became an issue for three months and caused him to sit tight trying to clear his problem while his family was elsewhere. If you have issues, confess them and clear them now rather than later.

You probably spent alot of time filling out the SF-86. That being said understand that sometimes your paperwork may be misplaced by others. Roll Eyes Save all of the information you have collected just in case you need to fill it out again, and again, and again....

Google a new form (SF-86) and fill it out. Take that info and have someone (OS) set-up an e-qip account for you and get that done. The unit OS might take an SF-86. All new Recruits or applicants use e-qip instead of the old SF-86 to get in the CG.

I make sure each new Recruit (shipper) has a copy of his/her e-qip (SF-86) Most have to update that info at a new unit or when applying for AN program etc.
