Make sure you like to shine brass and stand still doing nothing for long hours of the day. If you enjoy marching this may be the job for you. If you are single there are lots and lots of single women in the DC area.
Not sure if you perception of Honor Guard duty is accurate. One of my AMT3's spent time on the Honor Guard prior to aviation school. His experience on the Honor Guard has stood us well in helping provide honorable send-offs to the dying vets of WW2. He will do quite well with EOT awards.
You know the guard has changed a lot since I was in it and when I was stationed in the Honor Guard it was a lot of shining brass(buckles, buttons and shoe brass) marching, presentation of the colors, drill team, cordons at the white house, pentagon, Andrews AFB, Full Honors at the Tomb and So Lawn of the White House. Change of Command Cerimonies and burials and salutes. There was more and all had to be practised for and done tpo a very high level of expertice. Lots and lots of marching and practicing as well as keeping your gear all squared away. We also had a great NCO club for recreational drinking! Good tennis, softball and volley ball games and golf at FT Belvoir. Well thats what I remember from my year in Washington. Peace, Dick
EOT award = End Of Tour award. Yes, I despise the timing of them because if one does the deed one should receive timely recognition. Periodically, some progress can be made in ramming an award through the process without someone (usually an officer who doesn't understand the timing of SWE points) spouting off about "this is good for an EOT award" and then putting it in the EOT Tray. Neverending story.
We had a guy come through here who just got out of the Ceremonial Honor Guard. He said it felt like an extension of boot camp. On the good side he did go to alot of amazing places he wouldn't have seen otherwise...
I was promissed my A school after 1 year of service to the honor guard and was made an e-3 right away after boot camp. At the time the ASM rate was very small and had a long wait to get into A school.
