There is no Guaranteed A School for AMT as far as my understanding. After bootcamp you report to your first duty station, get familiar with coast guard life, get qualifications completed, and after awhile you will get a flight physical and put your name on the AMT A School list, you will then go to an Airstation for the airman program, I believe it's 4 months long and you will head to A School.
When I went through back in 2003, those were the steps I had to do to get into aviation.
as of right now they are only showing ONE class for all of 2010 im sure they will add more but just really dont know what is going on. im 41 on the list and am having to think real hard. It will mean i wont graduate if i went to the next class offered i wouldnt make 3rd until this time next year
i went to basic training december of 2008, i was 29 at the time, and turned 30 mid december. because i have college credit and an AS degree the age limit is a bit difference. talk to your recruiter about this. i am the oldest non rate in the coast guard.
AMT is not available for guaranteed A School. Only 4 rates are available. My recommendation is to wait for the school that is going to make you happy. Don't think short term. 10 years from now where are you going to be? In a rate you had to wait for and happy with your job? In a rate you are not happy with, trying to decide whether to suffer through 10 more years to hit retirement? or back on the outside after your first enlistment looking for a job or doing something there you're not happy with? I waited 18 months to go to ET school. I could certainly have chosen something with a shorter wait, but I hate to think where I would be today if I had done so. Don't make a decision that is going to leave you regretting what you missed out on, just to get away from painting and cleaning a few months earlier.
Thank you Bill Reed for the reply. I am ok with waiting, though as far as I understand it I am too old at 27 now without guaranteed A school. Maybe there is an age waiver. I am waiting to talk to a recruiter, but I was told it will be 6-8 weeks before I can talk to one(it's been three) so I am waiting for the call.
Like you said I don't want to join just for any A school that happens to be available, but I'm being made to wait months just to find out if it is possible for me to join.
Any idea about age waivers? I am ok going non rate for a while if I can get in.
I wouldn't wait for a call if I were you. Yes, things are slow going as far as new enlistments, more than likely due to the economy and current Active Duty servicemen and women re-upping. The CG, as far as I know, has never had to recruit AS hardcore as the other branches. But that's just b/c of size and we rock so all our men and women extend their enlistment. My husband was told to be diligent and that if he wanted to be CG he'd have to call them. They're not really hurting for people right now but Cape May isn't going to shut down entirely. It's a great branch of service to be involved with, I wish you all the best in your pursuit.
