I am a FN on a (WTGB 108) Ice breaking tug, I originally joined the USCG with the goal of becoming an AST, but soon discoved what other rates have to offer. I am sure I want to go aviation but I am keeping my options open as far as which aviation rate would best suit my interests. I was a private pilot before I joined the coast guard and saw how valuable AMT'S job skills are in the civillian world. I was curious as to what job skills AMT'S learn and what AMT A school is like?
As the old saying goes, "Choose your rate, choose your fate". Go AET if you're looking to promote, they're giving promotions away. Go AST if you want to claw your way to second class.
Aviation NEEDS people to go AST and succeed in getting through that "A" school. If you desire AMT "A" school, you'll be on track to acquire the A&P license from the FAA (it's not a "gimmee" but with perseverance you'll succeed). AET's are currently promoting quickly from E-4 to E-5. AET's are not ruled-out of the A&P license path but the mechanical aspects and requirements aren't quite as lined-up with AET as they are with AMT. However, AMT and AET both go via the AVI CWO path if that's what you desire.
I saw the guardian and the AST was the only one who didn't die. That's enough proof for me. Did you see how upset old Ben Randall was? but at least he made it.
