I have a few questions about AMT A-School.

1. Does anyone know how long the wait is for A-School?

I have been waiting for about 5 months but based on my position on the AMT list I know that I am not going to get picked up in less than 6 months even though that is what the estimated wait time on the actual A-School list says.

2. Is the A-School list for the Airman program or the actual A-School?

3. How many students are in a typical class?

Sorry, if I have a lot of questions I guess you could say I am eager to start.

Sincerely,
David C.

1. When I had my name on the list, it was generally a 4 to 6 month wait. However, they are slowing down how many classes are going through ATTC, which accounts for why you are probably going to have a longer wait. If it makes it any better, I actually watched my name sit at the top of the list for a year and a half while Ifinished my commitment to the Honor Guard.

2. Once your name gets in the top 20, you should get orders to an airstation to begin the airman program. You then have about 3 to 4 months of filling out your Airman AMT PQS, it should take you less time than that though. AT the end of the four months, you get some officers to sign off that you can work around helicopters without kiling yourself, and you go to A-school.

3. Between 18 and 20, they try to aim for full classes of 20, but sometimes people mess up in transit.

Good Luck David

I'm just curious ... if you are accepted into the Airmen program ... do you have to know which rate you would like before obtaining that? Or is it once you're accepted you better have a clear sight in mind?

Just wondering as I think any aviation rate sounds amazing.
Thanks

Yes, you need to pick a rating and place your name on the A-School wait list for which ever particular rating you choose. Once your number is called on the wait list, you receive orders to the Airman Program at an air station. Once at the air station, you'll be there for approximately 4 months before heading off to A-School.

From what I've seen, you can expect 8 months on the list until you get orders to the airman program. Those orders are generally sent out 6-10 weeks before the actual report date. The airman program is 4 months long before you go to A school then add another 18 weeks or so for A school.

You initially need to choose a rating and be on the A-school list before being accepted into the Airman Program. However, once you're an AN, you have the option of switching ratings. This usually requires an extra month or two in the AN Program to complete the rating-specific AN practical factors, but it's worth waiting for the desired job. I see rating changes among AN all the time.

Good luck,
Rob

This "option" would only be available based on needs of the service. If and when a switch is allowed, it is handled on a case by case basis. In no way is it the norm, but rather an exception to the rule.

If I enlisted, I would enter E-3. If I decided to go the aviation route (which I most likely would) how long after boot would it be before I could get the opportunity for the airman program? Is it still 6 months or so ... or would it be a good year and a half at least?
Thanks.

The rules just changed. Three AMT "A" school classes have been cancelled and the class sizes cut in half. An Airman at my air station had orders in-hand for AMT School and they were cancelled; he's gonna be with us for several months longer than expected.

In response to Dave 1960:

1. According to the A-School list the same three classes that were on the schedule in July are still on the list which is current as of 15Aug09.

Is this accurate or is it not? (In reference to three AMT A-Schools being cut)

2. Currently I am 69 on the list 40 if you count the people the people who have holds and I moved up 18 from July. However, you stated that class sizes were cut in half.

Are there only 10 students per class now?

I have been watching the A-School list very closely since I was placed on it at the beginning of February and I had projected getting orders for the Airman Program sometime in December/January. If what you say is true then that would clearly throw that prediction out the window.

Pat_J everything that Dave1960 posted is correct. Classes sizes were cut in half to 10/class and the number of classes were reduced to at least half the number they had last year. AMT3's are over manned so they slowed down the production dramatically. I am 68 on the list and I have been told to expect another year to year and a half wait. I know it's not the news you wanted to hear but I guess it is what it is. Good Luck!!!

Ouch. Keep your heads up, prospective AMT's! The wait is worth it, just ask Valtron.
I waited a year and a half as well, 2 years total to be an AMT.
