I've been training to for bootcamp and was planning on enlisting in June, I've been planning on going AMT. I was just wondering how long everyone on here has been waiting so far, or waited, to go to A school. From what I've been hearing it's a pretty long wait.

The length of your wait depends alot on how much effort you are willing to put into going aviation. The first step is getting a ASVAB score high enough to go AMT and getting through bootcamp. If your score is not high enough you can always retake it after bootcamp, just dont keep putting it off. After bootcamp graduation, about 98% of the time you will be sent to a boat unit of some sort (small boat station, big boat, ANT) there are rarities where people will get sent to an airstation right out of bootcamp but this is rare and I would not count on it. After you have been at your fisrt unit for 4 months you can put your name on the A-school list then it is just a waiting game to get sent to an airsta for your AN program. Some units also have other stipulations on going to A-school such as different qualifications you must achieve first. Ask when you first report to your unit so that you know what is expected of you before you can go to A-school. For right now your best bet is to show your recruiter initiative and drive by pushing to get all your paperwork and forms back to them in a timely manner and being able to enlist, if you show the recruiter you want to join and you want to be there full on not half-in things will get done quicker and you will be off to cape may in no time. Concentrate on getting ready for bootcamp now and then after graduation try to get into aviation, you will not regret it! My last word of advice for you is that while you are at your boat unit before A-school, WORK YOUR TAIL OFF! Get every qualification they will allow you to get, and get them all way before your deadlines come up. It will make you good friends in the USCG and show that you are hard worker and should be a good petty officer. Semper P! |

I waited 11 months but its worth the wait to go a rate that you want instead of the quickest moving rate.

question - i completed my flight physical in bootcamp in january, and as of june 4th i will have been at my first station for 4 months as a SN. i have been granted my sec clearance. will these factors possibly get me into the AN program a bit quicker than others, because i hear that alot of people have to wait a while to get the physical etc.
also, i will ask my command, but if i didnt hear anything negative regarding my flight physical can i assume that i passed? VR SN Wilson |

The best thing you can do with your flight physical is talk to medical, even though you took it in bootcamp and may have passed it, it needs to be sent off to some sort of HQ to be "approved". So make sure you go talk to your HS's about your flight physical and make sure it is good to go.
Also flight physicals are good for 2 years and depending on when your B-day is, when you tyook it, and when you graduate A-school you may be required to take another flight physical when you get to your airman program. As far as going quicker on the list, yes it is possible but not guaranteed, however if you have all your requirements done and are higher up on the list, you will go before someone lower on the list that does not have everything done. Good luck! |
