When you become a MP officer what happens? Do you get to see your family alot or are you always away from them. I want to know if you get to see your family or not. Long periods of time away or is it not that bad. Can you be stationed at a state base and be a MP officer over there. I know they dont need a lot of MP's over in Iraq since there are so many already over there discerning MP's.Also I'm a freshman in college just started ROTC on a four year scholarship. I want to be stationed in Fort Lee Virginia so i dont know if they will need MP's Officers is there a way too find out. Thanks

Wow you really did wander in off the streets.
MP's in a garrison environment work shifts so you'll be off duty ~12 hours a day. Do with it what you want or need to do. I think you need to do a bit of research on what exactly a military police do as your questions are a bit vague. As an MP officer you would get the opportunity to see soldiers at thier worst in garrison. In the field you supply convoy and outpost security, traffic management and rear areas security. All most every large post has MP's, Wackenhutt hasnt taken over everything yet .. |

No, somebody needs to do more homework. MP Officers lead MP's. What else do you need to know? It doesn't matter what the task. MP Officers lead MP's. Now do your research as to what Army MP's do... Or, better yet, go ask a recruiter, or visit an Army base that has MP's at it. Good luck! Carpe Debier: Seize a Lager! |

Well, I guess my six years (AD and Reserve) as an MP doesn't count for anything, hmmm? I know what MY MP officers did. Carpe Debier: Seize a Lager! |

Anything and everything. That's what MPs do.
Daily activity is influenced by mission, location, guidance from higher, and everything from weather (I'm not being sarcastic) to equipment. In short, there is no canned answer to your question. Experience will vary from person to person, so the best anyone can give you is what they did at a particular time in a particular place. What you've found so far is as good as you're going to get. That's what I learned in my 11+ years as an MP. |

I think Jerry's answer was pretty good. There is no way anyone is going to be able to tell you EXACTLY what you're going to be doing, on a day to day basis. Every day is different. You might do one thing today, maybe something else tomorrow.
As said, MPs in a garrison enviroment are going away. In a few years, you probably will only see MPs in a Combat Support role or a Ceremonial role at some places, like Ft Myer. The only thing guaranteed is paperwork, lots and lots of paperwork. What even makes you think you'll be an MP Officer? You won't find out about that until you Branch. You need to talk to someone in your ROTC unit about that. Guaranteed assignment to Ft Lee? Good luck with that. Needs of the Army. You're a Freshman. 3 1/2 more yesras? You're going to A-stan. Maybe not Iraq, but I'd almost put money on A-stan. |

How about Ft Eustis, Ft Belvoir, Ft Myer? Not sure if Ft Story is still around.

Jiminy Christmas! Did they stop teaching punctuation in school?
Nothing like a 'barely-got-hair-on-my-juevos' telling Active Duty people what to do over the interwebz... No job in the military has a complete, all encompassing description on the internet, even WITH the almighty Google and Bing. Some things you'll just have to learn OJT. |

I am an active Duty MP Officer so maybe I can answer your questions. If you become a Platoon Leader, you will lead an MP Platoon and occasionally be an MP Duty Officer depending on your base. If you are assigned to BN Staff, you can be anything they tell you to be. Here is the thing--being an MP officer is not all that different from other branches since it is all about leading Soldiers. IF you want to patrol the road often then you best reconsider becoming an officer.
The Military Police Corps is one of the most deployed branches of the Army. When the Army leaves most engagements, MP's remain behind to keep order and train the native forces. If you are looking to stay in garrison, you had best reconsider going through ROTC because you WILL deploy during your career. At current OPTEMPO, plan to deploy for a year and be back about a year or so before repeating. You can ADSO for a lot of options--that does not mean you are going to get what you want. If you are in the top ten percent of your ROTC year group you will branch what you want (top 250 in the country out of ALL ROTC caldets in your class). Then, of your top duty station list you will get what the Army wants you to get. I was lucky and got my first branch and duty station choice. I am the only officer I have heard of in my class to have that "distinction". By the way--talk to your ROTC cadre. They have more connections than you know and will connect you with MP officers to talk more if you are interested. Last point-- As a future officer you really need to work on your grammar and word usage. You will be expected to brief your Soldiers, peers, and seniors and the message needs to be clearly received or you will fail your missions. |

Good post, but actually Gumby, the MP Corps is INCREASING its' emphasis on garrison. We've lost a lot doing non-stop combat ops for the better part of the last decade, but the Commandant's current guidance is that the role of L&O in both OSUT and re-class courses be increased, not cut back. A big reason you don't see quite as much MP presence on posts CONUS is because of OPTEMPO. They're needed more Downrange than here in the States. Don't get me wrong, our DA Police brothers and sisters will be around and probably have increased responsibilities for the duration of the GWOT at least, but as far as MP's losing the garrison mission completely and permanently? It's not happening. Having said that, I miss the days of coming on post and being greeted by MP's in Class B's with white hat or BDU's with Black helmet liners. Call me old-school. |

With the loss of the TDA MP units, garrison LE has been gone for quite some time. It's just a matter of time before the RCF's and USDB go to civilian guards as well. |

JB, unless you know something BG Phillips and RCSM Kirkland don't know, you might want to qualify your remarks. See the below link for some good info on this subject from RCSM Kirkland, put out in Sept 2009. BLUF, L&O is expanding, not going away folks. Maintain your core competencies as MP's. It's what makes you unique from the rest of the Army and what makes COCOM's want MP's bad.

This is why MP's have lost to DA Police. Further, I'd say you now have a deficit among your senior NCO's and Officers as well. Not too mention, most of the senior NCO's and Officers I've met have strong disdain for LE. My unit mobilized and back filled AC MP's. With in 6 months a PFC in my unit had more LE experience then a AC SSG/SFC. Until the MP Corps makes the realization that LE is more than a 6 week "red" cycle and is a full time job, DA Police will be predominant in performing garrison LE. |
