Hey all. I have a basic idea of what they do, things like security around bases, deployed overseas, etc. I'm interested in joining the army as an MP and I was just wondering what some of your experiences as an MP were? Did you enjoy it? I've heard some people say it was a **** job, and some say they've loved it. How often are MPs deployed overseas? What's the most common duty of an MP? Anyways, thanks all!

Simple question, simple answer.

EVERYTHING

MP=multipurpose

In the states, you could be doing Law and Order (Police officer). But that is few and far between. Most of that is contracted out now and days. But there are a few bases who still use MP's.

Overseas:
*Running a detainee center (Prison)
*Running check points on MSR's
*PTT -Police Transition or IE.. Training Foreign military (Iraqi Police etc)
*Kicking down doors/MOUT
*Convoy Security
*MSR Patrols/City Patrols.

To be honest, in combat, there isn't much an MP can't be tasked to do.

I love being an MP and I wouldn't want any other position personally.

Those are two things I was hoping to hear. I like the idea of an MP and was hoping that they serve overseas more than at home. Its good to hear from an actual MP that it is a good job, too. Thanks!

I hope you guys don't have a qouta for tickets like the Air Force mp guys did overseas , my platoon had just got back to the FOB from a convoy security trip and one of our ASV's got a dang ticket for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign at 0300 ! And I don't recall any mp 's being anywhere on MSR Tampa from Talill all the way to TQ in 06-07.

Guess it all depends where you were norbyfoerster. In Taji (07-08)the USAF SF's were great..had two seperate groups rotate through. Good PMO, good road guys and their version of MPI were great. Then a AD Army MP unit came through who were just awful...their PMO had three seperate sexual harassment complaints from enlisted in the first three weeks...our CID Duty vehicle got stopped and the driver Agent ticketed for no seat belt...you just never know....

So are USAF SFs basically the same as MPs? Or what is the difference?

NO! USAF SF, which i am is nothing like MPs. MPs do alot more down range. From what I understand, MPs have more of an opportunity go better schools, get more training, and active MPs step in here if I'm wrong, training such as Jump, Ranger ect. I'm on Elmendorf AFB right next door to Fort Rich, I've seen the MPs work and have much respect for them. I also pulled security for a C-17 that was getting ready to send the MP unit down range. Those guys were a great group of guys. A Security Forces Member is a glorified Security Guard. That is exactly why I'm thinking about Blue to Green. MPs paved the way for SF, since the AF is the sister service to the Army. So to active MPs thanks for paving the way and keep on keepin on.

"Quota!?! We have no quotas. We used to have a quota, but now we can write as many tickets as we want. Three more and I get a toaster oven..." Big Grin

What's with the name? I know the USCG and the USAF have similar uniforms, but I'd rather be on one of our boats than your aircrafts when either one runs out of fuel... Wink

Lol, yeah I agree with the runnin out of fuel thing. When I joined this site I was thinking about the coast guard. But i joined the AF, now im thinking blue to green, the Air Force doesnt offer what I'm looking for.

Sorry about the puncution and spelling I'm using my phone.

Hey, Kraut:

Did they even have seatbelts in Taji?

This looks like a Code 3 run. Where's the blue light?
