I leave for basic July 15. I'm going for MP. I've been hearin that MP's get sent over seas all the time. I just want to know if that is true and if so for how long? Thanks
MP's seem to have a high deployment tempo, especially if you are incorporated into a brigade combat team (BCT). Your normal deployments are from 12 to 15 months.
MP is one of the most deployed force in the Army. Right up there with Civil Affairs and the Combat Arms folks. There has always been a shortage of MPs. The MP acronym also means "Multi-Purpose" because you will find yourself doing things that they didn't train you for in AIT, but you nevertheless do, because you quite simply put, have to. Some Major Unit commanders don't know how to use MPs effectively, this kind of mirrors the Snipers, under-equipped, highly qualified, and most often than not, used to do something that makes no sense whatsoever. Welcome to the fraternal order of the Military Police, or in the unpleasant vernacular: "BOHICA" which means: "BEND OVER, HERE IT COMES AGAIN".
There were several people people in my platoon at Leonard Wood that, before they even finished OSUT, knew they were going. One guy even knew he had something like less than 30 days between getting home and leaving for pre-deployment training with his ARNG unit. People I've kept in touch with that didn't know then are going now. My best friend from there is on his way at the moment.

When it comes down to it, the needs of the Army supercede the needs of you. You can volunteer for certain assignments like providing security for a convoy, but for the most part, as a new recruit, you'll be used where the Army needs you.
Well, M.P.'s are travelling the World to exotic places all the time, Ha Ha. We are deployed quite often active as well as reserve and national guard. We can end up as close as your local Army post or in Afghanistan near Pakistan or even in Korea near the D.M.Z. If you hope to see the world, M.P. is your best bet aside from the Combat Arms.
