I am a prior AF Security Specialist. I am going to MEPS in a fortnight and will likely be a 31B. I would like to have k-9 put in my contract. How do I make that happen? Or do I have to get assigned and then become K-9 later? Thanks.

I was hoping someone would chime in that had some more recent information. Most MP dog handlers that I knew were on their second enlistment at least. Many of them NCO's. MEPS would not be too early to start asking though. The worst they can do is tell you not now.

I was not a dog handler, however I have been the guy in the bite suit many times. It takes a lot of dedication. Good luck.

You have to apply after you go on active duty to be in K-9.

I was a dog handler in the MP's from 1970 thru 1973. I was overseas, and I was sent to the 1972 Munich Olympic games to quell terrorist activity assigned with the 636th Ord Co (EOD) Our EOD's disarmed bombs or potential threats protecting the athelets and civilians at the games. My dog sniffed out explosives, booby traps, and biochemical agents. Then when anything was detected, my dog (Hasso) and I protected the EOD guys from outside hazzards hindering them from disarming or eliminating any threats. My advice on becoming a dog handler is to go to your company clerk, or 1st Sgt. and volunteer. Good luck and thanks for serving.
