Hello, I am the Director of Development of the Veteran Homestead Inc. a 501c3 nonprofit in Fitchburg Massachusetts. After reading about the programs and shelters that the VA is funding, I thought I would tell you about a program that is being built without the VA . The "Northeast Veteran Training and Rehabilitation Center" (NVTRC) in Gardner Massachusetts will be a twenty unit housing project with a 6000 square foot therapy building on the grounds. This facility is designed to service returning wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who, because of economic, social, physical or family problems have found themselves in need of the kind of comprehensive rehabilitation that the VA is not providing. Many returning veterans are coming home to empty bank accounts and homes in foreclosure because of the extended tours of duty they are forced to endure. With the divorce rate for returning wounded at 85% our director decided that something must be done to keep these families together while simultaneously rehabilitating the soldier. The NVTRC will provide housing for the veteran and his or her family at NO COST and utilities expenses will be designed around the families ability to pay. A case manager will set up a therapy regime for the veteran that will provide Occupational, Physical and emotional therapy sessions as often as needed to expedite recovery. All members of the family will receive counseling as needed. Our facility is located on the grounds of Mount Wachusett Community College who have donated the land and have offered to provide a tuition free education for both the veteran and their families. All of the amenities at the college will also be available to the NVTRC clients at NO COST. This synergistic approach will help veterans recover from not only their physical wounds but also their social and economic problems. Low cost of living and economic counseling and advocacy will provide relief from their loss of income, a new, up to date therapy department will expedite recovery from physical and emotional problems and a free education will allow the veteran to obtain new employment at a livable wage.
We have raised 5.5 million of the 7 million the program will cost and are breaking ground in September of 2008 with a finish date of January 2010. All of this without the help of the VA.
If you would like more information about the Veteran Homestead Inc., our other programs or the NVTRC, please visit our web site at www.veteranhomestead.org or give our Director a call at (978) 353-0234.
Thank you for listening.
