I posted this link in the ATON section but thought I would post it in here as well.
I watched the show "Dirty Jobs" on the Discovery Channel last night and at the end of the show, the host, Mike Rowe, asked for viewers to send in ideas for the show as they have just about run out after three seasons.
The first thing I thought of was the buoy cleaning the ATON crews have to do.
Maybe one of the PA's can send Mike Rowe/Dirty Jobs an invitation for an ATON cruise.
So many young men and women have seen lots of stories about the ASM's/pilots with "The Guardian" and coverage of Hurricane Katrina and probably scenes of the 44's and 47's training at Cape D. I wonder how many know anything about the Coast Guard's ATON mission?
I suggested the same thing to the Motion Picture Office in LA last week. We've been thinking about it for quite awhile and then saw Rowe on Larry King and said what the heck, I'd ping the MoPic guys. They say that there was some talk about it a few years back so it's at the top of their minds, too.
It's about time the buoy tenders get some credit. I did a year and half as a non rate and though it was a tough and dirty job, it was also my best unit.
I hope to see "DIRTY JOBS" on the buoy deck scrapping and painting.

I agree. I was at an ANT as a non-rate and still have dreams of being coverd in bird crap and barnacles... lol. I'll forward you post on to the guys at the motion picture office and drop the bug in their ear again. The black hull guys should get some recognition for what they do. It would definitely make for a good episode.
You know, I cant think of any dirtier job than a black hull. I too did a 2 year stint on a 180 then went to a 137 for a year, and must say it was the most fun I had in the CG, but also the nastiest. The ATON community get overlooked alot due to the main mission of the CG, but they are due credit. Bird crap, barnacles, and just hot and sweaty, eatting your meals on the buoy deck on paper plates. Those were the days!
My command just talked to MOPIC about this show. They are working on it and have a large file of suggestions. They are waiting on HQ to allow it to happen.
I think it would be great if the discovery channel did an all-military episode of Dirty Jobs. In the past I've seen him with the USAF cleaning KC-135 supertanker bladders, and with the USA working in the motorpool and also out on an FTX with the unit. Spend some time at an ATON unit, spend some time down in the engine room with some MK's, spend some time inspecting containers, or spend some time rummaging around the false bulkheads in a go-fast. Heck they could even spend a day in Baltimore at the yard. I imagine in ALL these places you could find some hard workin' coasties who'd LOVE to show the world what their daily grind looks like! I have also emailed thru the DC website the suggestion! -Jeff
CGC Aspen will be featured on Dirty Jobs around February 2008. Email me at henry.wong@uscg.mil and I will send you some pics.

That's excellent news. I watch Dirty Jobs often and everytime I hear Mike Rowe asking for suggestions for a show, I keep saying, why not a CG ATON boat?
Thanks for the info and hopefully word will get out so others can watch.
