How much action does a Food Service Specialist tend to get? I want a job in the CG that gets me out in the the action like, saving lives, stopping drugs, basic CG missions.
How much of that does a FSS get to do?
My recruiter told me its not like "an army Chef".
That all you have to do is raise your hand and say you want to help.
I would love to do something like this or actual Boatswains mate.

Thank you.

I would think that most crews would love to have a cook that takes the time to get qualified with stuff other than cook. Many cooks are EMTs, Boarding Team Members and such. I have even heard of a Surfman Qualified FS1.

We are all part of the same Coast Guard.

With that said, if your goal in life is jump out of helicopters, shoot guns or drive boats then it is illogical to go FS. The primary job of an FS is to support the crew. This most likley means "Cooking" for them. The first few years of an FS's life needs to be spent on being the best cook possible. All the other stuff is extra.

So YES, what the recruiter told you is true. I just point out that you need to keep it in a proper perspective.

Chefmark is right. The "opportunity" is there, but the reality is that you are a cook. Chances are you're going underway out of "A" school as I did (mec). There are going to be about 9 ratings in your crew that the LEO/LSO/etc. can draw from to make up his boarding teams/tie down teams/etc., but there is only 1 rating that can make lunch and dinner during that 12 hour boarding. Same with surface swimmers, boat crewman, etc. The main time in your career that you're going to be able to get in on the "action" is once you get assigned to a PB. That's when most of the EMT, BTM, swimmer, coxswain type stuff starts to happen. So if you really have a passion for cooking (and cleaning...)and don't mind taking the first few years of your time in to really focus on your rating (and you shouldn't!) before playing Army, then by all means consider FS Smile.

Ok advice; however, I am going to disagree with some of it. Yes, there is only one rate that can cook when underway and some commands like to keep it that way. I like you went went to a ship out of "A" School and spent a lot of time doing what I love. I also was on the boarding team. As for the opportunity on the the PB as you move through you time in the CG...this is where you will get your opportuity. There I was an FS by day and a BTM, QMOW, etc. by night.

With all ths said, you can do anything you want to do while in the Coast Guard...no one will hold you back as long as you prove that you are willing to learn, listen, and perform.

I clean all the time. Love cooking but I'd also like to be able to "save lives". In a sense I'd be saving lives doing FS. Keeping my crew from starvingSmile. Thanx for the feedback.

Aa an FS3 you might now have time to do all the coastie thing, like BTM or EMT at first, you are the cook. but it is not like you can never do them. I would say to learn your rate first. once you understand the FS rate work on getting BTM or EMT, ect. If that is what you like. when I was a SN I was station on a 110 PB, and our FS2 has his BTM quals. He would go on boarding, but if it was close to a meal hour he did get pulled back so he could get the meal out. As for myself, when I made 3rd I can to a 210. over the last month or so I have been trainng as part of the BDS team with our HS1, and I am PCSing out this summer to an 87 PB, I am hoping to beable to get some EMT training and be the EMT on board. so as a FS Yes you can do all the coastie things like saving lives, and LE. learn your rate first and go from there. Good luck, and best to you
