Hey all, I am a reservist who has to relocate due to my civilian career. That said, I am VERY limited in options in my current rate (BM). One of the ideas suggested to me is to lateral into a different job. I was hoping that there was reserve FS out here who could clue me into what life is like as a reserve FS.
Feel free to look me up in global if you want to reply directly.
It is all about available billets... in this case the area that I am moving to (greater Chicago) is currently OVERBILLITED with reserve BM's. The down side to being a reservist is that since we don't transfer the same way as the AD does, there is usually less overall opportunity to move. Most open billets are filled by new recruits (as reserves are REQUIRED to pick a rate/A school) and NOT PCS. Talking to FOT, they said that there was currently a need for FS in that area (making it easier for me to "find a home"). Make sense?
I'm not a reservist but the experience I've had with them, it seems pretty cake (no pun intended). I've got an FS1 that come in one weekend a month, 2 weeks a year...all he does is cook. No paperwork, no bs. Just whips out a few meals and thats it. Same thing with other units I've been to. They show up, cook, clean up sometimes, and bounce...seems easy as pie to me (look at these food references...terrible)
I have had the same experience that Chewy13 has. at a galley I was a striker in we had a FS3 that would come in twice a month and day work for us. the only thing you might have to do is for you 2 week a year drill you might have to come when the galley staff is on leave and duty cook for the two weeks. again durning x-mas that same FS3 came in and was put in the duty cook rotation when that base was on the 2 week stand down. but for FS's our duty cook goes 2 on and 2 off, sliding weekend so for your two 2 drill you realy only work 1 week, granted it is 12 to 14hr days. as for lateraling over, I not sure how reservist work but FS is a strikable rate, if you have any experience working in a kitchen or cooking it should not take too long to strike if you realy work at it. if not see if you can go to "A" school, I think the longist I have seen the list was 8 people deep with 2 on medical hold. Good luck
