Looking for some history on the Food Service Rating.

Question:
Does anyone have any information on who was the first Master Chief Cook in the Coast Guard? I would appreciate any assistance that I can get.

If anyone knows who the first MasterChief Cook was, do they know the year that he or she was in?

Hey Chris,

Where are you located at? I was with you on the Tampa when you were an ET. I have to make sure that I come to see you.

Thanks for the input. I found some of this same information that you have down in here. It was a CCTI question for me. I was thinking of entering this information but I was thinking that it may be something this individual may have found out. I wanted to get a second opinion to make sure that I was not missing anything. Thanks for your assistance.

i don't know who the first overall was but in case you run across any first female is the cook rates past to present(cs,ss,fs) question; master chief karen naulty was the first e-7, e-8, and e-9. she just retired about a month ago.

The cooks rate was Commissary Steward before Commissaryman.

For what it's worth'

The first Reserve SSCM was Albert Robbs, advanced 1 Sept 1973.

Of note is the rate SSCM ( Subsistance Specialist). This would narrow down the date of the merger on the Commissaryman and Steward ratings to 1 July 1973 ( start of the fiscal year back then ??)

Never would have been a Master Chief Cook. The Chief Cook and Chief Steward were merged into Chief Steward in about 1948. The E-8 and E-9 grades weren't authorized until 1958

A little more for the detectives, if they're still digging into this. The "Reservist" Dec '58 announced that HQ had selected the first Chiefs for the new grades. 100 were selected for E-8 and 25 for E-9. Engineman being the largest rating got 25 E-8s and 5 E-9s.

That leaves 15 E-9s for the other ratings. Another clue to search out.
