I'm coming up on the end of my 6 year enlistment, and am set to make OS2 by the end of the year. However, I hate my job and don't know if I could do it until retirement. I began striking FS at a station for 7 months and really liked it, but went OS in all honesty, to avoid getting underway. I'm over my seaphobia.

My questions are few, but need answers from FS's. Thanks in advance.

1. CAN I even lateral over from critical to super critical rate?

2. If yes, would I need to strike on my own time or would I go to "A" school/collect bonus?

3. Not that I'm greedy, but if I were to lateral over, would I get an SRB for FS3 if I re-up this time next year? FYI...the money isn't the main draw. Just a "Bonus".

I'd appreciate any input. Have at it.

Don't let MC see that! Just kidding. I'm also an OS going on five years set to make OS2 soon. I thought about going PA once. At the time (maybe still is?), PA was critical just like FS, and OS was going to be as well. I never really looked into too far because I like being an OS, but I asked around just to see. Eveyone seemed to agree that you can lateral from a critical rate to another critical rate as long as both rating MC's and the detailer can figure something out. I'm not 100% sure tho, that was just what I heard. As far as your other questions, I don't know.

That's what I thought about the critical to critical lateral. I know I'd have to route a chit up and get command approval, but from there, I'm lost. The constant night/day watches are really taking a toll on my mind/body. My internal clock is severly messed up. I don't know that I can take another 14.5 years of this.

The normalcy of the hours, ability to actually be up and actively engaged in WORK, and the bonuses are all huge pulls for me.

I can feel that for sure. We have crazy hours, but I've heard that it isn't too much better for FS's? More power too them, but I think I'd rather take a mid than wake up a few hours before breakfast. That is not a knock on FS's, every meal I've ever eaten by an FS was really good! I'm just not too much of a morning person.

I'll get up to put the coffee on and crack some eggs, so long as I don't have to do 2 nights on 2 off and back to 2 days on. Ugh.

I think you might find an FS on a 378 does a bit more than that. And enjoy yourself as you bounce around in the Bering Sea working in a hot galley filled with food odors.....and the ship is rolling, pitching, rolling, pitching..... Wink Big Grin
