I'm currently Active duty Army I've been deployed for a few months now I have friends in the Coast Guard they all love it and I'm dying to get out of the Army I'm an E-4 right now I guess I'll lose rank coming in the Coast Guard. I want guaranteed A school is AET guaranteed? my asvab scores were pretty good from the Army gt score of 118 and all other scores on or around 120 nothing lower than 116 so i figure I should have a good list of options going in. I currently have a secret clearance and have held it for several years. I'm interested in Aircraft and i was about to go to a flight warrant school until i was deployed "involuntarily extended" for almost a full year past my ETS date so in short when i get home in july of 09 I have 90 days until my official ETS i want to jump right into the Coast guard and go straight to A school so i can get some freaking rank ... So what i really want to know about AET is in general how is it pretty cool how are the duty stations is it in the guaranteed A school program? how long and where is the A school at and do prior service go through that 4 week program in new jersey and straight to A school? or will i have to go to a duty station and wait it out?
You can get a "guaranteed" school if you pass the flight physical and test scores, but all that really means is that you'll go straight to an airstation for your airman program instead of going somewhere else and waiting a few months. You will have to go through the Airman program as it is Phase I of your apprenticeship (A-School being the second, and your 4-6 months non-flying time at an airstation being the third).
As to the airstations, a quick google search will bring up the list. Compared to everything I hear about being in Iraq, just about every airstation is cool.
Your best bet is to contact a recruiter as soon as you return stateside. They will have more answers for you about transferring over. From what I remember, you will only lose one paygrade swapping over, so down to E3. Once you get through the above mentioned Airman program and finish A School, you will get that stripe back. And, with the way the lower end promotions are going, you should be able to pin E5 six months later. Just let us know how it goes!!!
cool thanks guys all I can think about is going into the Coast Guard I have like about a year left until I can join but I am excited about it. Only thing is how hard will it be to drag my wife around to all this training?? I know probably A school and Pitstop I'm not going to be able to take her and thats fine but comming home then leaving for months at a time probably wont be alot of fun... worth it though anyone know what the flight physical test all includes? should it be pretty easy im about 6ft tall 180 pounds decent shape normal color and hearing all that jazz ..
depth perception and chest xrays is the biggie. also any head injury (concusions) can really hinder your physical other then that every thing should be a breze if your in good health
