Alright so I have been at my unit for about 6 months now and I put in for AET A school. But When the list is updated my name is not on it. My XPO says that I go to the airman program first and then they put me on the A-school list. But what I am reading is different. Is my XPO right, or should I be on the A-School list???

Your XPO is incorrect. You submit your request thru the chain of command and it makes it's way up the EPM. Once they get it, your name should show up on the AET A School list. When your number comes up, the Airman Detailer will cut you orders to an air station of his choosing and at that point you will enter the Airman Program. If/when you successfully make it past that, you will then report to AET A School. If you successfully make it past A Scool, then you're off to your first air station.

A couple of very tiny details first. Do you have your Aircrew Candidate Flt Physical completed yet? Is your security clearance package submitted? Are your ASVAB scores good enough? If you can't pass the physical or get a security clearance, you can't get into aviation. You can always bring your ASVAB score up if need be.

If you haven't done it yet, make a visit to your local air station, check things out and ask alot of questions. That will give you an idea of what's going on.

Thank You TVCJohn I really appreciate your insight. I already have my flight physical and my security clearance, and my ASVAB is good enough. I do have one more question though. I was an aircraft electrician when I was in the Air Force. We had a certain career field that maintained support equiptment like the external power generator (HOBART), the lightalls, and the stands. Who keeps these things running?

It depends on the air station you're at. For routine, daily fluid checks, ops check's, etc, the duty section or line crew normal will. For discreps/ maintenance, it could be the FacEng/Public Works/Commercial folks. If it is very serious it might go back to ALC. Just depends on what piece of yellow gear it is.

How long ago did you put in for AET A school? It does sometimes experience some lag time but anything over a few weeks deserves further investigation.

I do have one other question that I have heard several conflicting answers for. Will I be able to bring my wife to A-School? I have heard that since it is longer than 4 months that I can but I have also read that is not true? Can some one please shine some light for me?

Again depends on aircraft type and number of aircraft per unit. The billets are based on a staffing standard basis.

more then likely not. I just had sent an airman threw to school upon returning he told me that his wife gave birth and the school would not let him take leave.

You need to be present at the laying of the keel, not the launching. Turns out your pretty much a spectator anyway. Women gave birth for a long time without the husband being present.

Your best bet would be to start talking to people to see if you can delay entry into school.

Good advice from Ex-CG_GM. Start talking to your chain of command. A delayed school date has been an option in the past but you need to let your command know what is going on. Leave during A school isn't likely to happen (emergency leave excepted).

In answer to one of your earlier questions, if you are TDY, your dependents can't go to A school with you. The CG cannot stop them from going to E-City, however. The problem is that you will have to pay for it - you will only receive the travel time and money for your TDY orders. You will have to deal with any housing issues - if you are currently in government quarters, there will be issues. You will have to find time to locate a place for your spouse to live and you probably won't be allowed to stay off base with your spouse. You will have to take care of transferring insurance and finding a primary care manager, etc..

I'm not saying you aren't capable of doing any or all of those things but make sure you know what you're getting into. The biggest problem is that you've already been advised that your dependents "will not and are not authorized to travel to "A" school with you" (bottom of page 1, http://www.uscg.mil/psc/epm/docs/A-SchoolList.pdf) and you're going to upset a lot of people at the school and at your unit. Some may even say that you disobeyed a direct order! You would be walking a very fine line with no one to back you up.

Please talk to your chain of command starting with your mentor, shop supervisor, watch captain, or shop chief - someone you report to on a day-to-day basis. Your concerns will probably have to go further up the chain but you must use the proper channels. I had many of the same questions and concerns prior to A school. It all worked out with the help of my command.

Thank you all for all of your advice. I talked to my shop super and he says that a delay would be my best coarse of action and is not difficult to do. I really appreciate all of your input.
