hello all, im currently in the navy, AT3 type. definetly want to join the uscg when i get out in 2 years, i hear the aviation/ uscg life is just so much better than the navy.

just wanting to hear if anyone can shed a lil light on that, as far as quality of life, and what the aviation side of uscg is like, as far as a typical day and what-not

knowing i have 2 years to go and am still a ways off, any advice as to what i should be gearing myself towards when i try to join? as far as training to have my AT rating match the AET's etc, any advice and insight would be appreciated, thanks.

AT is the Master rate, I wish we still had them...

To answer your question, go here:
http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-w/training/quals/quals.htm
and download the AET Performance Quals. You probably have something similar in the Navy.

In two years, you should probably be close to or at E5. Document as many of the current quals on our list with what you do/have done and it will be easier to press the recruiter into possibly keeping your rank. It kind of fluctuates with regards to keeping rank and attending bootcamp/"A" school again. Just do as much research as you can before you get out. And also see if you can find a recruiter that is an Aviation rate.

Go to the closest Airstation and hang out with some of the tweets and you can get a feel for how stuff works.
Good luck.

What Gus left out was how to properly jump a Diahatsu so that when upon landing the canopy shell flies off or how to push a 3 wheeled bicycle through the weight room wall.

TK, care to expand???

I don't know what you're talking about. I have heard a few stories about crashing Diahatsu's tho, but I don't recall them having anything to do with a canopy....

Now there are zings, and there are zings. That was a zing. In Gus's defense though, he is the inventor of the "Nav table plexiglass cover peanut M&M smasher". Unfortunately his invention was short lived due to the fact that Senior Chief Wells witnessed the entire invention process from birth to very sudden death.

Send me a Charge Sheet, PLEASE!!!!

Your lucky you'll be doing your initiation in Sacto, it's far and away the best place to do one.

My head isn't big, your point of relatively is small, that's all...

I'll definitely send you a charge sheet, as soon as they start me on all that stuff. From what I hear, CCTI won't be until May or so. I'm getting some rumblings that they are changning things up next time to bring back some of the old school stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing what they pull off. We should have a small handful of people going through it at once. Should be fun.

I seem to remember the Diatsu incident lol.

To original poster:
The great thing about Aviation in the Coast Guard as apposed to the Navy is your not stuck doing ONE thing day after day after day. You do EVERYTHING include FLY!!!! So it's always new. and did I mention you get to FLY!!!!!!!!

now the HERC guys posting above me might not feel the way I do about the flying part lol.

Aviation in the Navy and the Coast Guard couldn't be further apart.

The first thing is that you'll be a bastard love child cross of an AE and AT, but I keep hearing the Navy is moving in that direction anyway.

The second major thing is that you WILL be Aircrew qualified and fly regularly on whatever airframe you work on.

The third major thing has to do with deployments. Whereas in the Navy you'd deploy as an entire squadron, we deploy generally as a single plane and crew who fly and maintain the plane while deployed (underway in the case of a helo detachment on a cutter)

Hope this helps a little.

EDIT

I forgot to add that our uniforms are a definite upgrade!

It's too bad I can't tell the story about the purple "object" that went missing in Kodiak that one time.

I'm not sure when the whole charge sheet thing is going to start, but I'll zap one right out to you as well. I will be very sorely dissapointed if you don't apply your full creative talents to whatever you put on that sheet. I've seen too many of your past masterpieces. I'll know if you half a$$ it.
