According to most folks, the best one is the one you were just at while the worst one is the one your currently at.

Barbers Point in Ewa Beach, Hawaii has got to be in the top five.

> Accross the street from a knarly surfing and body boarding spot.

> Miles away from the higher priced real estate on Oahu.

> Need I mention the balmy trade winds and palm trees swaying in the breeze.

> Fairly expensive gas prices, but how far you plan on driving on an island?

> Nicely maintained BPAS facilities.

> One of the most unique and well attended bar and rec facilities in the USCG. (Always looking for good volleyball spikers in the sand pit).

There are a lot more pluses to BPAS that maybe some here who spent time there recently can advise to.

If you are into extreme, flying, hiking, climbing, hunting, skiing, fishing, kayaking, surfing, etc... nothing compares to Alaska, nothing on the lower 48 for just getting way out there and the people are as well way way out there!

The absolute, no doubt about it, best "air station" is located on the aft 01 deck of a 378'.

I was at Sitka a long long time ago and it was very nice. Great basketball and softball teams as well as great hunting, fishing and climbing and the flying was excellent. Duty was 1 in 4 on H3's. I'm not sure any of this is relevant because it took place between 79-81.
Good luck,
Dick Cool

Sitka or Kodiak.. Big unit or small, three airframes or one, high tempo or not. Both are small towns, both give you the beauty of alaska both have great fishing, hunting and outdoor life. (Both have brown bears Wink) I'm stationed in Sitka and I would love to stay. Been here since 2004 and I dont have much to complain about. I have heard and now feel that AirSta Sitka is the best unit in the CG!

The best air stations are the ones that have orange helicopters that you get to fly in.

The worst air stations are the ones with orange helicopters that you only get to look at and only then across a long, white wing.

I'm from houston originally, and toured AS Houston before joining the CG. It's a nice facility with 4 65's. I'm not sure what they get for a case load but i've been told they stay relatively busy. Alot of oil rig medivacs... so i'm told. I wouldn't mind going back there.

Most desired: Savannah, Los Angeles, San Diego.

Least desired: Kodiak, Elizabeth City.

Really depends on your life style though.

BLUETORCH - I'm curious about your comments on these locations. What's good and bad about them?

I've been stationed at 6 different ones and there are only 3 I haven't visited (yet). Like others have mentioned, it depends on what you AND your spouse like. Big cities/small towns, high cost/low cost, lots of malls/ a Walmart, outdoors/city life, hot/cold, southern accents/Brooklynese, fixed/rotary, etc. There's something for everyone out there if you just look and if you're around long enough, you'll see alot of it.

One last thing....if your spouse isn't happy, you won't be happy....it will be a long tour. Argue Make sure you have her/him in on the assignment process.

That's kinda the point we're at right now is trying to pick that first Station. So far first on the list is trying to be near a commissary and second is hopefully being close enough that having one vehicle will not be a major issue.

Close to a good DOD clinic comes in handy for the spouse and kids. The bigger the commissary the more you save, they buy in volume...hence cheaper to you.

Borinquen is a good place. I had two tours there. First one was a little tough but the last one was a blast. It's 3 year tours plus an Assignment Priority. A lot of things to do down there for you and the family. They have an online, weekly newspaper (Borinquen Beacon) that comes out. Check it out, you get a little taste of island life down there. Below is this weeks Beacon.

Good luck.....
