What can one expect his day to be like as an AET? Aside from when you have duty, is it pretty much a normal job as far as hours go? Can he expect to be part of the aircrew often or is that only a "special occasion" type deal? thanks.
But how often do they get the chance to go out on the missions? Would they go out whenever their airframe went, or would it be a once a week if you're lucky type deal?
I am a little confused about the chance to go out on missions thing? On C-130's unless they are doing a test flight there are always 2 AETs on board. On Helos its whoever is on duty or whoever is availible. On helos, both AETs and AMTs get quallified as Flight Mechs. So the amount of missions in reality should be about even as AMTs. On C-130s, The AETs hold different quallifications. Radio Operators and Navigators. On C-130s, you will get your share of missions and your share of Maintenance. I am not a helo guy so not to sure on maintenance for those guys. I know they stay busy though.
Hello! As too flight time we all have our minimum flight time that has to be acquired every month to maintain any and all of your qualifications (HELO or Fixed Wing). On the Helo side at your unit you will be standing SAR duty, but there will be flights every day and either AMT or AET can jump on it and take it(usually maintenance permiting), as soon as we take off we are all the same, you are the Helo Flight Mechanic (AMT or AET). Enjoy!
I think both Air-Frames are equally as important and will for sure keep you busy. I do believe as an AET on the C-130 side you will probaly fly a bit more than if you were to get stationed on Helo's.
