hi. first time poster, so thanks all of you for serving.

trying to keep up with my brother who is uscg, but he talks in acronyms and i don't always get what he's saying, nor what you all say. he took swe beginning of may

would someone be kind enough to explain some of the swe stuff to me? i get what they are, and that the scores are combined with other factors like awards and yrs in service to get a overall score (which probably has some acronym). that score determines whether a promotion is possible, and also the higher the score the better the chance of promotion. the raw score is the score for the swe you just took. correct so far?

what is an AMT1 and why is that important to the process?

thanks.

Okay your on the right track. However a high score doesn't always guarentee a high spot on the list. There are a few factors:

TIS (time in service, max of 20)
TIG (time in current paygrade, max of ten)
Award Points (max of ten)
Marks (based on performance)
Sea Time (time spent underway)
Test Score (graded on a curve)

All that can compensate for on shortfall. The enlisted ranks run E-1 to E-10. Only you take the SWE for current rate (AMT for example) and Pay Grade (AMT1 is a E-6). I know this might be confusing but it's the way the Coast Guard advaces. The exam is given twice a year. May and November. For E-7 and above only in May.
Hope this helps and if there are more questions ask.

Hey thanks very much. Let me see if I got it: all these different kind of points are then added up and some kind of list is made within the job type? The higher the points, the higher on the promo list. When/how does the list come out? And then, what/when happens from there? He is talking about becoming a WO.

I really appreciate it. He's been in for more than 20 years and she used to understand what he was talking about, but as she has gotten older, she relies on me to help her out. I try but I get confused too! I guess it's not an age thing. It's very important to her that she says the right thing in her prayers. If I can write out a timeline, I think it will give her some peace of mind. She's ex-Army (Korea, two tours) so she understands military waiting and not really knowing exact dates. Thanks again...and good luck to you.

The numbers people are posting in this thread are called raw scores. Those scores were obtained by the test answer sheets being scanned through a reader and indicate how many questions out of 150 were answered correctly. These numbers may change slightly because questions that were challenged during the exam need to be reviewed and credit given if appropriate. Then the raw scores will be converted to a standard (bell curve) score.

The next big step for the May SWE is publishing the advancement eligibility list. That list is determined by adding up the standard exam score, marks, time in service and all. The end result of this addition is called a final multiple. For last year's May SWE, the advancement list was published on 26 June 2006.

Next, a determination is made as to how many advancements are expected during the next year. This sets what we call the cutoffs. If a name is above the cutoff for the May 06 servicewide, it means advancement is guaranteed for that member (assuming of course they don't screw up and have their recommendation for advancement removed). Last year, the cutoff message came out on 08 September 06.

Actual advancements are based on vacancies. Normally, the first advancements off the May SWE occur on 01 Jan of the following year. A message comes out near the end of each month stating which members are authorized to be advance on the 1st of the month.

Becoming a Warrant Officer is a completely separate process. To be eligible for warrant, you have to either be E-7 or above, or be an E-6 that is in the top half of the advancement eligibility list. But the timelines and procedures are completely different.

Hey thank you very much for your input. I have a much clearer understanding of what is going on now. I printed out both of your emails and gave them to my mother and it has made a considerable difference already.

iS the cutoff list out? The last time my husband advanced we were able to view the scores online www.uscg.mil/hq or something like that.

Is there still a way to check online over the web? My husband can't remember how to find it either.

thanks. We are anxiously waiting to see if he made it to amt1

They still are not out, but the corrections have been made and scores are being updated. It should not be much longer. As soon as they become availible they will show up on here. Fred's Place and the forums are usally about two seconds behind HQ. Good luck everyone, but not to much I still want to make rank too. LOL
